NATCHITOCHES, La. - The Baylor softball team (9-0) matched its best start since 2007 with a 4-1 win at Northwestern State (6-5) on Monday evening. The Lady Bears recorded 10 hits, while Whitney Canion struck out 10 for the win.

"Whitney looked great in the circle and at the plate tonight," head coach Glenn Moore. "We have to keep getting better as a team, but I will take a road win."

Canion (4-0) was stellar in the circle, going 4.2 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out 10, her third 10-plus strikeout game of the season. Canion also went 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs, while Clare Hosack registered the first home run of her career

Dani Leal got the scoring going in the top of the second, leading off the inning with a triple. With one out, a groundout to first from Holly Holl was enough to bring Leal home for the RBI and a 1-0 lead. With two down, Canion singled to center before Hosack hit a towering home run to left field for a 3-0 advantage.

Canion got things going for herself in the fourth, starting a two-out rally with a double to right center. Hosack followed with a single to put runners at the corners, and Sydney Wilson sent a single over third base and down the line to score Canion for a 4-0 lead.

Canion continued to deal in the circle, retiring 12 of the 13 batters she faced. The lefty struck out seven of the last eight batters, with the final six going down on strikes.

Liz Paul came on in relief in the fifth, going 2.0 innings, allowing one hit, one run, two walks and three strikeouts. Courtney Repka came on in the final inning, retiring the first batter before issuing a pair of walks and bringing Canion back in to the circle to strikeout the final two batters.

The Lady Demons got on the board in the sixth when Taylor McLoughlin walked, stole second and was sacrificed over to second with a bunt. Cali Burke singled her home off the glove of a jumping Megan Turk, but Paul retired the next two batters to end the threat.

The Lady Bears will next be in action on Tuesday, taking on Louisiana Tech for a doubleheader in Ruston, La., beginning at 2:00 p.m.
