WACO, Texas - Starting pitchers Liz Paul and Courtney Repka combined for 16 strikeouts, allowing just one run in two complete-game efforts on day two of the QTI Powers Invitational on Saturday at Getterman Stadium. Baylor (14-0) picked up a 3-0 win over Central Arkansas (3-10) before defeating Louisiana Monroe (7-7) 2-1 in the nightcap.
The Lady Bears' 14-game winning streak is the longest in program history, passing the mark of 13 set by the 2002 team from Feb. 15-Feb. 24.
GAME ONE
Baylor 3, Central Arkansas 0
Baylor used a complete-game shutout from Liz Pau (3-0)l, while scoring all of its runs on homers from Whitney Canion and Shelbi Redfearn. Paul (3-0) went 7.0 innings, allowing four hits, no walks and eight strikeouts. Of the freshman's 80 pitches, 65 went for strikes.
Canion broke open a scoreless tie in the third, crushing her second home run of the season over the right center wall for a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Bears gave Paul a little more cushion in the sixth when Redfearn blasted a ball over left center for a two-run shot, making it 3-0. Leal led off the inning with a walk and was pinch run for by Chelsea Kovich.
Paul retired 16-straight batters at one point before allowing a one-out double in the seventh. With two on and one out, she got a strikeout and a line out to second to end the game.
GAME TWO
Baylor 2, Louisiana Monroe 1
Despite trailing for just the second time all season, Repka's strong pitching performance allowed the Lady Bears to come back with two runs in the third for the 2-1 win in game two on Saturday. Repka (5-0) went 7.0 innings, allowing one run, four hits, two walks and eight strikeouts in the win.
For the first time all season, Baylor allowed its opponent to score in the first inning. Brianna Love led off the game with a walk on an illegal pitch that gave ball four and advanced to second when another illegal pitch was called. Following a wild pitch from Repka, a groundout to second scored Love for a 1-0 ULM lead.
The Lady Bears took the lead back for good in the third, as Kathy Shelton led off the inning with a bunt single. Kayce Walker followed with her own bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher. Dani Leal then grounded to the pitcher, but another errant throw allowed her to reach third while Walker and Shelton crossed home plate for the 2-1 lead.
That was all Repka needed, as she received help from her catcher, Clare Hosack, who threw out three base runners on the night.
Baylor will go for the QTI Powers title on Sunday, facing No. 23 Houston (11-3) at 3:00 p.m. at Getterman Stadium.
