Recap | Box Score

Head Coach Steve Smith

On the idea of the team playing "small ball':
"The game today was almost a reversal of what happened yesterday. They had a couple of really nice plays in the outfield early in the game. We actually executed a little bit better early in the game, we scored a couple of runs in the first two innings. But Jon Ringenberg didn't have much for us today and I just thought we needed to get him out of there. I thought he dodged a bullet or two early and we have the guys to not have to leave him out there. The biggest missed opportunity for us was in the ninth inning. We had an opportunity to run and we had a guy out there who was really unsure of himself and it ended up costing us on the back guy (in the ninth)."

On finding and capitalizing on scoring opportunities:
"I feel like when we get a guy at first and second with nobody out we have good opportunities to score, but you have to do what the game asks you to do. There were several times in the game where we had to put balls in play. We had one where we had guys at second and third with no outs and get two strike outs. I think they have done a better job of, when they have been at second or third with less than two outs, of just taking what they are given. Everyone has pitched away quite a bit and the ball has been up some, and when you get it up to them they just hit a fly ball to left field and score him. I think some of our guys have been taking those pitches and waiting for something they can get a base hit with."

On Georgia`s defense:
"Well the outfielders have made great plays. Their infield play has been pretty solid as well. They had their errors too, their first baseman really saved the game for them by being able to stay on base with that wide throw from second, but I think it is just early in the year and these guys want to win. They are at home and sometimes that is harder than going on the road but there is a reason why they are in college and playing college baseball."

On Georgia's outfield making another huge play early in the game:
"That was a huge play. That was the second great catch that guy made against us. We had bases loaded at that point and that was a big opportunity for us and that ended up being the beginning of us just leaving runners stranded on base."

On Baylor again leaving runners on base and in scoring position:
"It is a huge problem and it is a problem we need to fix fast. We are getting runners that we should be able to score and we are not doing it. Games like today we lose when we should have blown them out. We had a bunch of hits but we just couldn't capitalize."

Freshaman Pitcher Dillon Newman:

On his pitching performance:
"I would say that in the third inning when I first got out there I was a little nervous. It was my first time pitching away with not many Baylor fans here and it kind of got to me at first, but after that first inning I was able to settle in and I felt good. I was just thinking to come out and hit my spots"

On the importance of pitching well in the relief spot:
"It is huge. If Jon gives up a couple of runs that can kind of put us down a little bit, but if I can come in and put up zeroes then that can boost our confidence and get us on a roll."
