WACO, Texas - Despite outhitting No. 23 Houston (13-3) 4-3, one unearned run was enough to hand Baylor (14-1) its first defeat of the season in the final game of the QTI Powers Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Getterman Stadium. The 1-0 loss snapped the longest winning streak in school history.
Whitney Canion (6-1) took the loss despite striking out 11, allowing three hits, one unearned run and three walks. She now has 20, 10-plus strikeout games in her career and four on the season. Holly Holl extended her hitting streak to five games, while Kayce Walker led the way with two hits on the afternoon.
Houston's lone run came in the third, as Katy Beth Sherman grounded to first, but a bad throw allowed her to reach safely and advance to second with no outs. After two pop ups, Baillie Lott singled up the middle to score Sherman.
Baylor's best opportunity to score came in the second with Holl singling to left center and reaching second on a Clare Hosack single with two outs. However, a Megan Turk pop up ended the inning and the threat.
Amanda Crabtree (7-0) picked up the win, allowing four hits, one walk and striking out seven in 7.0 innings.
Baylor will look to rebound with a doubleheader against Prairie View A&M on Tuesday, March 1 beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Getterman Stadium.
