TUCSON, Ariz. - No. 22 Baylor (21-2) used three home runs and a one-hit shutout from Whitney Canion to blank No. 4 Arizona (20-3) 6-0 at Hillenbrand Stadium on Friday night. With the win, the Lady Bears are now 5-1 against ranked teams on the year.
"What a fantastic team effort tonight from this team," head coach Glenn Moore said. "We got a dominating hitting and pitching performance tonight in one of the toughest places to play in the entire country."
Baylor had at least one runner on base in every inning, as BU tallied 10 hits on the night. Shelbi Redfearn and Dani Leal each recorded a pair of hits, while Redfearn, Whitney Canion and Clare Hosack all homered for the Lady Bears.
Canion (10-1) threw 7.0 innings, allowing just one hit, walking three and striking out nine in the complete-game shutout win, her second of the season.
Baylor jumped out in front in the second as Whitney Canion hammered a 1-0 pitch over the right field wall for her third homer of the year and a 1-0 lead. Holly Holl then drew a walk and was sacrificed over to second on a bunt from Clare Hosack. A single from Shelbi Redfearn to right center put runners at the corners, and Holl was delivered home on an RBI-groundout from KJ Freeland. With two out and Redfearn at third, Kathy Shelton delivered an infield single to second for the RBI and a 3-0 lead.
The Lady Bears loaded the bases in the third with singles from Dani Leal and Holly Holl and a walk from Hosack, but could not take advantage, leaving the score 3-0.
Canion kept the Wildcats' bats quite, retiring eight-straight at one point, allowing just one hit, an infield single, on the night.
With one out in the fifth, Baylor struck again with back-to-back home runs from a pair of freshmen, as Hosack and Redfearn made it 6-0 for the Lady Bears. Canion drew a one-out walk, and with two outs, Hosack belted a two-run shot over the left field wall for a 5-0 lead. Redfearn then stepped to the plate and homered over left center for her sixth of the year and a 6-0 advantage.
Canion, who retired 11 of the last 12 batters she faced, got the side in order in the seventh for the win.
"We know Arizona is too good of a team to stay down and we have to come back out tomorrow and give an even stronger effort," Moore said.
Baylor will face the Wildcats in the second game of the three-game series on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. CT.
