WACO, Texas - Two days after its first Big 12 loss in over four years, Baylor's 10th-ranked women's tennis (11-3) team got back to its winning ways in a 6-1 win over the University of Kansas (6-6) on Sunday at the Baylor Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.
The Lady Bears had a 57-match Big 12 win streak snapped on Friday, but came back to win all three doubles and five of six singles matches in straight sets. In the three doubles matches, Baylor lost just a total of five games en route to the clean sweep.
"We were more focused today, but we still have a long way to go," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "This team understands what they need to do, and now the key is to do it everyday."
The Baylor duo of Jelena Stanivuk and Cristina Danaila played a near-perfect match on their way to an 8-0 win over KU's Monica Pezzoti and Paulina Los on Court 3. Shortly after on Court 2, the pair of Diana Nakic and Taylor Ormond lost just one game in an 8-1 win over Sara Lazarevic and Erin Wilbert. Nina Secerbegovic and Karolina Filipiak added the third win, 8-4, over Ekaterina Morozova and Dylan Windom.
It was a race to finish on the first three singles courts that concluded. Stanivuk, ranked 119th, put up a 6-0 first set over Lazarevic, then added a 6-1 second set to seal the victory.
Leading 2-0, Baylor's Filipiak and Nakic didn't leave the outcome to chance for Baylor, as they each earned 6-1, 6-2 wins. Filipiak, ranked 116th, took down Los on Court 4, while the 44th-ranked Nakic defeated Pezzotti on Court 2.
With the victory in hand, Secerbegovic and Ormond each added straight-set victories. Playing on Court 1, No. 34 Secerbegovic defeated Morozova 6-4, 6-2. Ormond was able to defeat Wilbert 6-0, 6-3 on Court 5.
After playing four matches in the past seven days, the Lady Bears will have two days off before taking on No. 28 SMU at 5 p.m. at the Baylor Tennis Center on Wednesday, March 23.
