Men's Golf Drops 4-1 Decision to South Carolina

BALL GROUND, Ga. - Baylor fell to 0-3 in match play Monday after suffering a 4-1 setback to South Carolina in the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship at Hawks Ridge Golf Club. The 13th-seeded Bears will conclude match play Tuesday against No. 7 seed Texas at 7:30 a.m. CDT.
In the top spot, sophomore Ryan O'Rear lost to South Carolina's Blaine Woodruff, 3 and 2. After O'Rear went 1-up on the opening hole, Woodruff squared the match two holes later and eventually held a one-hole lead. O'Rear bounced back with an eagle on the par-5 No. 7 to square the match through 11 holes. Woodruff won the three of the next five holes to win 3 and 2.
Fellow sophomore Jerry Ruiz carded his second win of match play, knocking off South Carolina's Dean Hester, 3 and 2. South Carolina's Wesley Bryan led from start to finish, defeating Baylor's Payne Gniewek, 6 and 4. In the final two matches, South Carolina's Logan Harrell and Clint Tolleson both held off Cody Paladino and Matthew Seligmann, respectively, 3 and 2.
Through three matches, Baylor is 3-12 with Ruiz owning two of the Bears' individual match wins (Gniewek the other). Live scoring for Tuesday's final match against Big 12 rival Texas will be available at www.golfstat.com.
