WACO - No. 15 Baylor (26-4) swept a doubleheader from FIU (15-14) with a 2-0 win in game one, followed by a 4-3 win in game two. The Lady Bears stole six bases on the night.
"It was a little bit sloppy tonight, but we got the wins," head coach Glenn Moore said. "FIU is a good, scrappy team that gave us a good challenge that we needed before starting conference play on Saturday."
Game One
No. 15 Baylor 2, FIU 0
Liz Paul (6-0) threw her second complete-game shutout of the season, allowing just four hits, one walk and striking out four to lead Baylor to victory.
Dani Leal put the Lady Bears on the board in the first with an RBI-single to left center that scored Kathy Shelton, who walked to lead off the inning. BU loaded the bases with one out in the inning, but a fielder's choice and a groundout ended the threat.
Baylor added one more in the fourth with Shelbi Redfearn stealing three bases after a two-out single. Redfearn stole second and third before KJ Freeland reached after being hit by a pitch. Freeland then stole second and Redfearn broke for home, reaching safely when the throw back towards home wasn't in time.
The Golden Panthers loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, but Paul got a groundout to short to put FIU away.
Game Two
No. 15 Baylor 4, FIU 3
Baylor scored two runs in each of the first two innings before hanging on for a 4-3 win in game two.
Canion (13-3) picked up the win after allowing six hits, three runs, three walks and striking out six in a complete-game effort.
Dani Leal picked up her eighth home run of the season, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
With two away in the first, Megan Turk battled through a 13-pitch at-bat before a grounder to short was bobbled that allowed her to reach safely. That set the stage for Leal to hit a lined shot off a flag pole in right center for the 2-0 lead.
Clare Hosack ripped a one-out double off the left field wall, and Redfearn singled to right, but forced a throw from the catcher to second that got away and allowed Hosack to cross home plate for the 3-0 advantage. Later in the second, Shelton ripped a double down the right field line that scored Redfearn, making it 4-0.
FIU cut the lead in half in the third, with an RBI-double from Beth Peller, who later scored on an RBI-single from Ash McClain.
Baylor took the 4-2 lead into the seventh, but with two outs, McClain struck again with an RBI-single up the middle to cut the lead in half. With runners at second and third, Canion ended the threat and the game with a strikeout on a 3-2 pitch.
The Lady Bears will open Big 12 play by hosting No. 21 Texas A&M (27-7) on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Getterman Stadium.
