COLUMBIA, Mo. - To start the Big 12 schedule, Baylor's seventh-ranked women's tennis team kept its nearly four-year conference unbeaten streak alive with a 5-2 win over No. 58 Missouri on Saturday in Columbia, Mo.
"Overall, Missouri is a really improved, veteran team that is playing well," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "They play well at home on a fast indoor court and it took a little time to make adjustements. I was proud of the way our team made adjustments, especially Jelena (Stanivuk). She was in a real tough match and found a way to pull out the victory."
Baylor ran its Big 12 win streak to 57 overall matches, including 43 in a row in the regular season with a win that moved its 2011 record to 7-1 overall, 1-0 in the league. The Lady Bears took the doubles point, winning two of three matches, then won four of six singles matches on the way to victory.
In doubles, Baylor took victories on Courts 1 and 2, with the combination of Diana Nakic and Sona Novakova taking the day's first win on Court 1. After Missouri took the win on Court 3, 8-4, over Abby Stainback and Karolina Filipiak, the duo of Nina Secerbegovic and Jelena Stanivuk helped Baylor earn the point with an 8-5 win on Court 1.
"I am pleased that we are definitely getting better at our doubles," Scrivano said. "That is an important point in a match, and it was good to see us win it for the second match in a row."
In singles, the Lady Bears took victories on Courts 1-4, while dropping Courts 5 and 6. Novakova and Nakic each collected straight victories to quickly give Baylor a 3-0 lead. No. 11 Novakova defeated Kaitlyn Ritchie 6-3, 6-2, while No. 36 Nakic took down Marlen Hacke 6-3, 6-2.
Both Secerbegovic and Stanivuk dropped the opening set on their courts, but battled back to win in three sets. No. 51 Secerbegovic, playing Court 2 for the first time this season, came back from a tie-break loss in the opening set to go 6-2, 6-1 for the clinching point. No. 94 Stanivuk lost the opener 7-5 to Maria Christensen, but battled back to win a 7-6 tiebreak in the second and a 10-8 super tiebreaker in the third.
Baylor has just one day off before its next match at No. 14 Notre Dame. The Lady Bears travel to South Bend, Ind., to take on the Fighting Irish on Sunday, March 4, at Noon ET/11 a.m. CT.
