SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Baylor (17-1) used 10 hits and a 14-strikeout, complete-game performance from Whitney Canion to upset No. 6 UCLA (14-4) 5-1 late Friday night at the Campbell/Cartier Classic in San Diego, Calif. It marked the second time in as many years that the Lady Bears beat the Bruins, knocking them off as the No. 3 team on Feb. 27, 2010.
"What a true, hard fought-win," head coach Glenn Moore said. "We traveled all day and started at almost midnight, central time, but this team didn't let it affect them. We earned it as a team and Whitney led the way."
Canion (7-1) struck out 14 batters, allowed three hits, one run and three walks in 7.0 innings. The lefty had a no-hitter through 5.2 innings, while her shutout was disbanded in the seventh.
Four different Baylor players registered a pair of hits, as Kathy Shelton, Dani Leal, Megan Turk and Canion each had two apiece. Turk had two doubles, while Leal blasted her team-leading sixth home run and Shelton had two stolen bases.
Scoreless through three, Canion helped herself with a two-out, RBI-double to score Turk, who doubled two batters earlier for a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Bears busted it open in the fifth, as Shelton knocked a one-out single up the middle and came around to score on a Walker triple to left center, making it 2-0. Leal then squeezed a bunt between the pitcher and first base for a base hit, allowing Leal to come in for a three-run lead. With two outs, Turk struck with her second double, driving in Leal for the 4-0 advantage.
Canion continued to cruise, retiring eight-straight before giving up her first hit on a DiSalvatore two-out single in the sixth.
Leal added an insurance run in the seventh when she smashed a solo home run over the grandstands in left and into a parking lot for a 5-0 lead.
UCLA got its lone run in the seventh with a Reed RBI-single with two outs, but Canion struck out the game's final batter for the win.
Donna Kerr (5-1) took the loss, allowing seven hits, four runs and striking out seven in 4.1 innings.
Baylor will face Long Beach State (11-6) on Saturday at 5:45 CT in day two of the Campbell/Cartier Classic.
