June 17, 2011ORLANDO, Fla. - On the same day that the Baylor Bear Foundation announced that it had raised a record-breaking $7.6 million in support of the school's 19-sport intercollegiate athletics program, the organization's Executive Director, Doug Smith, received the 2011 University Fundraiser of the Year award from the National Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD). Smith was honored along with other national award winners at the 2011 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup Luncheon that was held in conjunction with the 46th annual NACDA Convention at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando, Fla.

"Doug is a consummate development professional who has worked tirelessly over the past decade to raise funds for student-athlete scholarships at Baylor. His volunteer-based annual fund model has been an overwhelming success and resulted in seven consecutive record years for the Bear Foundation," said Director of Athletics Ian McCaw. "Moreover, he played a vital role in the highly successful Victory With Integrity campaign that has charted a bright future for Baylor Athletics."

For the 2010-11 fiscal year, which ended May 31, the Baylor Bear Foundation contributed a record $7.659 million for scholarship support of the school's 19-sport intercollegiate athletics program through annual giving ($5.577 million), endowment interest ($1.267 million) and sky box revenues ($814,124). The BBF's 2010-11 contribution is an increase of more than $1.1 million over its 2009-10 then-record gift of $6.509 million, and its annual giving total was also a Foundation record. The Bear Foundation's year-end totals do not reflect any capital construction gifts received during the year.

Smith has more than 40 years of experience in university and athletics administration, including the last 35 years focusing on athletics development. During those years, he has been responsible for the planning, administration and direction of fundraising programs at eight Division I FBS institutions, and created new annual giving programs at four of those universities.

During his early years, Smith developed a team concept philosophy of fundraising and traveled the country speaking at athletics conferences regarding this form of fundraising. He developed and implemented annual athletics fund drives at Southern Methodist University, the University of New Mexico, the University of Oklahoma, Rice University and Baylor University, with a number of these annual fund drives involving over 400 donors participating as volunteers. The team concept resulted in record-breaking totals at each institution.

Smith just completed his 13th year at Baylor University, where he serves as the executive associate athletics director for development. At Baylor he has transformed the annual giving program and increased the support base from less than $2 million per year to more than $7 million per year. Moreover, he spearheaded the recently completed Victory With Integrity campaign that raised more than $95 million over five years. Throughout the duration of the campaign, Smith was personally responsible for cultivating, soliciting and securing the largest gift to the campaign.

Smith is a founding member of the National Athletic Fundraising Association (NAFRA) and was named "National Athletic Fund Raiser of the Year" in 1990 by this organization. Smith was also a founding member of the National Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD). Smith served on the board of directors of both of these organizations.
