IRVING, Texas - With a perfect week in singles and a mounting 16-match win streak, Baylor women's tennis junior Nina Secerbegovic was named the Big 12 Athlete of the Week on Tuesday as announced by league officials.
In leading Baylor to a 3-0 week with wins over No. 11 Clemson, No. 38 Nebraska and Iowa State, Secerbegovic went 3-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles. Her singles victories moved her current win streak to 16 matches overall, and her conference win streak to 12 matches. In those 16 matches, Secerbegovic has lost just two sets.
The Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina, native defeated Clemson's 51st-ranked Keri Wong 6-2, 6-2, as well as Nebraska's Madeleine Geibert 6-0, 6-4 and Iowa State's Maria Macedo 6-1, 6-3.
In doubles, Secerbegovic and Karolina Filipiak, who have teamed together for just two weeks, took dominating wins over Nebraska and Iowa State pairs. The Baylor combo's only loss of the week came to the No. 1-ranked doubles team in the country, 8-5, against Clemson's Wong and Josipa Bek.
The honor marks the second time this season that Secerbegovic has won the award, and third time in her career. She was named the Big 12 Athlete of the Week on March 22, as well as March 16, 2010.
Baylor's seventh-ranked team will step out of conference at the start of an upcoming three-match road swing, taking on No. 16 Northwestern in Evanston, Ill., on April 14. The Lady Bears will then travel to Boulder, Colo., to take on Colorado on April 17 and to College Station, Texas, to take on No. 35 Texas A&M on April 20.
