LAWRENCE, Kan. - The No. 15 Baylor softball team (33-8, 6-3 used 12 hits and a six-run second inning en route to a 9-3 win over Kansas (28-16, 1-12) on a windy Saturday afternoon at Arrocha Ballpark in Lawrence.

"We did a nice job of jumping on them early," head coach Glenn Moore said. "It wasn't our sharpest performance, but we were able to accomplish a lot of what we set out to do and got the win we needed."

Whitney Canion (18-5) earned the win, going 4.0 innings, allowing two hits, two walks and six strikeouts. Liz Paul came on in relief, going 3.0 innings, giving up seven hits, three runs, one walk and five strikeouts.

Alex Jones (5-1) picked up the loss, allowing six runs, one earned and striking out one in 1.2 innings.

Kayce Walker paced the way for BU on offense, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored and totaling her second-highest hit total of the year. Kathy Shelton and KJ Freeland also registered a pair of hits on the day.

The Lady Bears busted the door open in the second, scoring six runs on six hits, five coming with two outs. Dani Leal led off the inning with her 12th home run of the year, blasting a 3-2 pitch to center for the 1-0 lead. With two down, Freeland singled to center and advanced to third on a double from Clare Hosack. A grounder to shortstop from Sydney Wilson looked like it would end the inning, but it was bobbled, allowing Freeland to score and the inning to continue. Shelton then laid down a bunt in front of home that scored Hosack and a Walker single scored Wilson, making it 4-0. Allie Clark came on in relief of Jones, and threw a wild pitch that advanced runners to second and third, allowing Megan Turk to rip a two-RBI single to right for the 6-0 advantage.

Shelton led off the fourth with a single and picked up her 24th stolen base to get in scoring position. With one out, Leal grounded out to the pitcher, scoring Shelton for the 7-0 lead.

Canion struck out the side in order in the bottom of the fourth, ending her afternoon.

Kansas picked up a pair in the fifth with a two-run homer from Maggie Hull, cutting the Baylor lead to five.

The Lady Bears answered back in the sixth, as Canion picked up an RBI on a ground out to short, scoring Walker, who led off the inning with a single. With Turk at third, Holly Holl ripped a single to center for an RBI and a 9-2 lead.

After working out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth, Paul found the bases loaded again in the seventh, but she allowed just one run in the inning on a Mariah Montgomery single.

Baylor will look for its second conference-series sweep of the season when it faces the Jayhawks at noon on Sunday.
