WACO, Texas - Baylor's seventh-ranked women's tennis team enters the final week of its regular season, traveling to Texas A&M for a 6 p.m. tilt on Wednesday, and returning home Thursday to take on Texas Tech at 6 p.m. in the season finale.
Baylor, which sits in sole possession of first place in the Big 12, brings in a record of 20-3, 8-1 in league play. The Lady Bears are one game ahead of Texas, Oklahoma and Texas Tech in the loss column. With one more conference win, BU can clinch at least share of the Big 12 regular season title, but wins in each of the last two matches will earn them the title outright.
The Lady Bears have been on a tear over the past month, currently riding a 10-match win streak. The season-long streak includes wins over six top-40 opponents, including three ranked in the top 20. Last week, Baylor earned one of their biggest wins of the season, taking a 4-3 road win over No. 15 Northwestern.
Senior Jelena Stanivuk ended the match in dramatic fashion with a three-set duel that ended in a tiebreak for the final point. Stanivuk, ranked 107th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, comes into the week with an eight match win streak. v That win streak, however, is only the third-best in singles on the team. No. 39 Nina Secerbegovic has won 17 matches in a row, while No. 47 Diana Nakic has won 12 matches in a row without losing a set. Adding to the top of the lineup, Baylor's Sona Novakova is ranked 15th entering the week.
In conference play, Baylor's singles lineup has been fierce against opponents. With a 44-10 combined record, the Lady Bears are undefeated on Courts 2, 3, and 4 with a perfect 9-0 mark on each.
Texas A&M brings an experience squad into Wednesday's match. The Aggies, who have a 13-6, 6-3 record, are led by sophomore Nazari Urbina. Ranked 30th, Urbina boasts a team-leading 25-8 record on the season. Currently on a three-match win streak, TAMU has signature wins over No. 32 Tulsa and No. 34 Nebraska on the season.
Texas A&M holds an 18-17 all-time record against Baylor, but the Lady Bears have won each of the last 10 matches between the teams.
On Thursday, BU will host Texas Tech in the regular season finale at the Baylor Tennis Center.
