WACO, Texas - For the seventh consecutive season, Baylor's seventh-ranked women's tennis team (22-3, 10-1) hoisted the Big12 Conference regular season trophy after defeating Texas Tech (17-6, 7-3), 6-1, on Thursday night at the Baylor Tennis Center.
The Lady Bears claimed the conference title outright, being the only one-loss team in the Big 12. They will also earn the No. 1 seed in next weekend's Big 12 Tennis Championship in Waco, Texas.
"I couldn't be prouder of the way the ladies battled through the season to get this trophy," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "They came into tonight with the mindset that they wanted to be the undisputed Big 12 regular season champions, and it showed on the court. The ladies have had their ups and downs, and used the practices they had to get better every day. It never gets old holding up a Big 12 trophy."
Baylor's 12th consecutive win didn't come without some fight in the Lady Raiders, especially in doubles action. While Court 1 and 2 split lopsided decisions, break points were hard to come by for the majority of the match.
Texas Tech won the first doubles court to finish with the duo of Caroline Starck and Nikki Sanders winning four consecutive games to close out Baylor's Jelena Stanivuk and Taylor Ormond, 8-2. The Lady Bears leveled the race for the point with a win on Court 1 by Nina Secerbegovic and Karolina Filipiak. The Baylor pair took an 8-4 win over Tech's Samantha Adams and Kelsy Garland.
Already with a 1-0 lead, the Lady Bears took the first set on five of the six singles courts, starting with a dominating 6-1 set-win by Diana Nakic on Court 3. Baylor's hottest player over the past month, the 47th-ranked Nakic won her 14th consecutive match after taking the second set 6-3. The win gives her a dual-match record of 18-5 on the season.
After Nakic's win, the points rolled in for Baylor with Secerbegovic returning to form after her first loss in over a month just one day ago. Ranked 39th in the NCAA, Secerbegovic dismantled Adams on Court 2 with a 6-3, 6-2 win to give her a 21-2 dual-match record for the season.
Stanivuk, a senior, clinched the match and the Big 12 title on Court 5 with the fourth Baylor point. Ranked 107th, Stanivuk also continued her recent streak, moving her consecutive-win barrage to 10 matches with a 7-6(5), 6-2 win over Haley Fournier.
Another senior, Ormond, made a late charge in the second set to win her match in straight sets on Court 6. After earning a 6-4 first set, Ormond faced a 5-3 deficit in the second set. Battling back, she won four consecutive games to take the match.
Fifteenth-ranked Sona Novakova added the final point of the day for the Lady Bears on Court 1 over No. 121 Ullathorned. The Baylor junior won identical 6-4 sets for her team-leading 28th win of the season.
Next up for the Lady Bears is next weekend's Big 12 Women's Tennis Championship at the Baylor Tennis Center. Playing host to the championship, Baylor will look to win its sixth consecutive tournament title. Tournament information can be located on www.BaylorBears.com on the championship central page.
