WACO - No. 17 Baylor (36-10) overcame a one hour, 16 minute weather delay and a 1-0 deficit to score four unanswered for a rain-shortened, 4-1 win over Texas State (26-20) in five innings on Tuesday night at Getterman Stadium.
"It was tough to get any momentum with the weather we had, but I am glad we came out with a win," head coach Glenn Moore said. "We have a big game on Wednesday against Texas and I hope Baylor nation will come out to support us."
Dani Leal paced the offense with a 2-for-2 performance. Whitney Canion (20-7) earned the win, going 3.0 innings, allowing two hits, one earned run, one walk and striking out three. Alicia Vasquez allowed just one hit in 2.0 innings of relief, adding one strikeout.
Inclement weather struck in the middle of the first, causing an hour and 16 minute delay. A two-out walk to Emery in the top of the second allowed Rother to lace a double to the right-center gap for a 1-0 Texas State lead.
Baylor answered in the bottom half of the inning with two runs. Leal drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A ground out her at third, before Holly Holl looped a single down the left field line for to tie the game. KJ Freeland then drew a walk and Clare Hosack singled to center to load the bases. Sydney Wilson hit a pop fly to right that was dropped by the right fielder, but a force out at second got Hosack, who was on her way back to first to tag, allowing Holl to cross home plate.
Leal made it 3-1 for the Lady Bears with an RBI-single up the middle that scored Kayce Walker, who reached on a fielding error at second.
Baylor recorded its final run in the fifth, as Walker led off with a walk, and reached third on a single from Leal. With two outs, Leal stole second, and on the throw, Walker broke for home, beating the tag for a 4-1 lead.
With lightning and severe storms on their way, the game was called, giving BU the win.
Baylor will host No. 3 Texas (42-4, 11-0) on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. All fans are asked to wear green for Green Out Getterman, as the first 250 fans will receive a free t-shirt.
