WACO, Texas - Baylor's ninth-ranked women's tennis team (15-3, 5-1) won five of six singles matches en route its 12th consecutive win over No. 23 Texas (10-6, 5-2) on Sunday at the Baylor Tennis Center. The Lady Bears' winning streak over UT dates back to May 1, 2005.
"We have to give credit to Texas, they came out fired up after losing their last match to Texas Tech," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "But, I am proud of the way the ladies were able to focus and execute on the singles courts. Every win is big for us, and we'll use this for our confidence moving forward."
Baylor's singles lineup proved to be too strong for the Longhorns on the day. The Bears earned victories on Courts 1-5, including a high-ranked win by Sona Novakova on Court 1. Novakova, ranked 14th, was the first player off the court in the match with a 6-4, 6-3, win over 21st-ranked Aeriel Ellis.
With the scored knotted at 1-1, Baylor's Jelena Stanivuk and Nina Secerbegovic each earned straight-set victories to put Texas on the ropes. The 103rd-ranked Stanivuk fought off a furious rally in the second set for a 6-2, 7-5 win, while Secerbegovic, ranked 36th, won the first seven games on her way to a 6-0, 6-4 win.
On the brink of clinching the match, it was a race between Baylor's Diana Nakic and Karolina Filipiak to secure the last point needed. As Filipiak went into a flurry of trading points with Juliana Gajic on Court 5, Nakic was able to get the break-point she needed late in the match. On Court 3, Nakic took down Maggie Mello in a match fueled by spirited play and a ripe crowd, 6-4, 7-5.
Filipiak then added her victory, seizing control of her match after a first set that saw her win just one game. The 124th-ranked Baylor senior dropped the first set 1-6, but hit a hot streak and played her way to victory with a 6-0 second set, and a 6-3 closing set.
The doubles point continued to be one of contention for the Lady Bears, dropping to an early 1-0 deficit. Baylor held early leads on two of the three courts, but UT proved to be up to the challenge. The Longhorns earned victories on Courts 2 and 3.
On Court 2, the Texas combo of Damico and Ellis built a 7-2 lead, only to hold on to an 8-5 win after BU's Stanivuk and Nakic made a run. UT then sealed the point with a win on Court 3 by its combo of Gajic and Mello. The pair beat BU's Ormond and Filipiak, 8-5.
After the doubles point had been decided, Baylor salvaged a victory on Court 1 with a tiebreak win by the 35th-ranked combo of Secerbegovic and Novakova. Baylor's pair took an 8-7 (7-4) win over UT's Craddock and Gaytan-Leach.
The Lady Bears will hit the road next for a non-conference, top-15 matchup with 12th-ranked Clemson in Clemson, S.C. The match is slated for 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT against the 17-5 Tigers, who are riding a seven-match win streak.
