WACO, Texas - Joe Williams, a cornerback from Fort Scott Community College, has signed a financial aid contract and will enroll at Baylor University this summer and join head coach Art Briles' football program. Williams retains three seasons of eligibility and will play as a sophomore in 2011.
"This is a great pick up for us." Briles said. "We like that Joe plays with a lot of confidence and is a former high school quarterback. He brings experience to the defensive secondary; he'll come in here and vie for playing time."
The 5-10, 190-pound defensive back totaled 36 tackles, two interceptions and five pass breakups as a freshman at Fort Scott in 2010. He redshirted at FSCC in 2009.
The former high school quarterback prepped at Riverview Gardens High School in St. Louis, Mo. As a senior in 2008 Williams earned Class 6 all-state honors as an all-purpose player from the Associated Press and the MSSA. He threw for 2,354 yards on 159-of-282 passing and had 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
He led the Suburban North Conference in passing and was second in rushing as a senior, compiling 1,312 yards on 162 carries (8.1 average). He was named first-team all-conference quarterback.
Williams increases Baylor's number of incoming newcomers to 16 this fall, in addition to the four newcomers who joined the program prior to spring drills.
