ATHENS, Ga. - With its backs up against the wall after a 14-2 defeat in game two of the series, Baylor (45-13) bounced back with a 9-2 win over Georgia (51-14) to earn its second berth in the Women's College World Series on Sunday evening in Athens, Ga.
"This group of kids doesn't know how to quit and there are very few teams that could pull through what we did today," head coach Glenn Moore said. "Georgia is a great team and it took everything we had, but that is what we gave."
The Lady Bears will face Oklahoma State on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN2 in WCWS first round action.
"We are, I think, the true definition of a team, and we work hard. If that door opens, we're going to step inside of it and do as much damage as we can."
Game Two (Baylor 9, Georgia 2)
The Lady Bears hit three home runs in a game for the first time since April 6 at Texas Tech, as Whitney Canion, Megan Turk and Sydney Wilson each homered for BU.
Holly Holl, Kathy Shelton, Megan Turk and Kelsi Kettler each recorded two hits for BU.
Baylor took control of the game from the start, leaping out to a 5-0 lead in the first. With two outs, Leal got things going with a walk, followed by a walk from Canion as well. Holl then delivered her 11th double of the year to score Leal from second for the 1-0 lead. Shelton followed with a single to left field to double its lead before a three run shot to left center from Turk put Baylor up five.
Georgia answered with one of its own in the second on an RBI-double from Kristyn Sandberg, who drove in Brianna Hesson after leading off the inning with a double of her own.
Sandberg brought Georgia within three with a solo shot with one out in the fourth.
The Lady Bears busted the game open with a three-spot in the fifth, including a two-out, two-run home run from Sydney Wilson, her second of the year. Kathy Shelton hit a one-out single to short and advanced to second on a ground out from Turk for the second out of the inning. Kelsi Kettler delivered her fourth hit of the weekend, an RBI-single to center for a 6-2 lead before Wilson't two-run shot.
Canion put the icing on the cake in the sixth with Canion's second home run of the weekend and sixth of the season to make it 9-2.
Baylor ended the game with Taylor Schlopy grounding into a 4-6-3 double play.
Canion (29-10) went the complete game, allowing seven hits, two earned runs, two walks and three strikeouts.
Game One (Georgia 14, Baylor 2 [5 innings])
The Bulldogs took an early lead for the second straight game, as Ashley Razey and Kristyn Sandberg hit back-to-back solo home runs to put Baylor in an early 2-0 deficit.
The Lady Bears stranded another opportunity in the second with Holly Holl reaching on a fielding error at second and advancing to second on a sac bunt from Kelsi Kettler. A single up the middle from Shelbi Redfearn put runners on the corners, and a high-chopping grounder to short from KJ Freeland put Redfearn at second, but a strikeout to Canion ended the threat.
Georgia doubled its lead in the third with a two-run blast to left from Taylor Schlopy, which brought home Wiggins, who doubled.
The Bulldogs put up a 10-spot in the fourth on six hits to put the game out of reach, as the Lady Bears ran through two pitchers after Canion exited in the third.
The Lady Bears broke up the shutout in the fourth on a two-RBI single from Kayce Walker that hit off the pitcher and into shallow left that scored KJ Freeland and Meagan Weldon.
