OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Sophomore pitcher Whitney Canion has accepted an invitation to the 2011 United States National Team tryout, the Amateur Softball Association announced Wednesday. The 2011 selection camp takes place at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., June 12-17.
"It is such an honor to be selected and I am truly blessed to be given this opportunity," Canion said. "To wear the red, white and blue has been a dream of mine since I was a kid and now I have a chance to fulfill it. I am proud to represent Baylor University and my great teammates."
Canion is 21-9 with a 1.35 ERA on the season, with 11 of those victories coming against ranked opponents. The lefty sits just 27 strikeouts away from setting the new all-time Baylor mark, surpassing Cristin Vitek's mark of 759. She holds the BU record for most 10-plus strikeout games with 23, including seven this season. Canion, who was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week on March 15, has won more conference weekly awards than any player in Baylor history.
The approximately 17 athletes selected to the USA Softball roster will compete in six different events in three countries. Fans in the United States will get four opportunities to see the team in action with three exhibition stops scheduled as well as the World Cup of Softball VI, July 21-25, in Oklahoma City.
