WACO - Dani Leal's game-winning base-hit in the bottom of the seventh led No. 19 Baylor (38-12, 9-7) to a 2-1 win over No. 20 Nebraska (35-11, 5-8) on Saturday afternoon at Getterman Stadium.
"A win is a win, and at this point in the season we will take them however we can get them," head coach Glenn Moore said. "Whitney Canion threw a great game and this team just never gives up."
Whitney Canion (22-9) struck out nine, allowing five hits, one run and three walks in 7.0 innings. Offensively, Leal was one of three players with two hits, with Holly Holl and Kathy Shelton. Holl and Leal each extended their hitting streaks to five games.
Baylor and Nebraska combined to leave 17 runners on base during the game, with all three runs being scored in the seventh.
After the Huskers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the seventh, Baylor began its rally. Shelbi Redfearn led off with a walk and advanced to second with a single through the left side from Shelton. After a pop out from Kayce Walker, Leal singled into left center, scoring Redfearn, and a bobble by the left fielder allowed Shelton to score from first for the 2-1 win.
With one out in the top of the seventh, Nebraska's Nikki Haget singled on a bunt and advanced to second on a fielder's choice by Taylor Edwards. Julie Brechtel then doubled to right center to score Haget, but Edwards was thrown out trying to score from first as the relay from Shelton to KJ Freeland to Clare Hosack delivered the second out, keeping the score, 1-0.
The Lady Bears threatened in the second, as Holl led off the inning with a single to right center, followed by a walk from Freeland. Back-to-back strikeouts from Hosack and Canion kept the runners at first and second, and a Redfearn pop out ended the threat.
Nebraska put runners on second and third with one out after a pair of BU errors and a sac bunt saw Canion get in her first jam of the day. But the lefty forced a foul out to first base and got Brechtel looking at strike three to end the inning.
A pair of walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for Nebraska in the fifth, but with two outs, Canion got another strikeout to leave the bases loaded.
The Lady Bears loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth, with a Redfearn one-out single and a Shelton walk putting runners at first and second. Walker then grounded into a fielder's choice, getting Redfearn out at third, but a walk from Leal loaded them with two outs. Ashley Hagemann forced a Megan Turk pop out to shallow left center, leaving the bases loaded.
The seventh-inning win was the third walk-off win for BU this season, all occurring in Big 12 play. The Lady Bears are now 13-7 against ranked opponents this season.
Baylor will wrap up the series with the Huskers on Sunday at noon. The Lady Bears will honor their four seniors (KJ Freeland, Dani Leal, Jordan Vannatta and Meagan Weldon) after the game.
