OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- The No. 11 Baylor softball team (46-14) suffered its first defeat of the Women's College World Series and will have to fight back from the loser's bracket in its quest for a National Championship after a 3-0 loss to No. 2 Alabama (53-9) on Friday night before a crowd of 8,627 at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.
"Give Alabama credit, they played a great game," head coach Glenn Moore said. "We didn't play a clean game, and we needed to in order to win tonight."
Whitney Canion (30-11) gave up six hits, three runs, two earned, five walks while striking out seven in the loss.
Kelsey Dunn (29-4) struck out eight and didn't surrender a walk, while allowing five hits in 6.0 innings.
Holly Holl paced the way offensively with two of the team's five hits.
Baylor stranded a pair of runners in the first after two-out infield singles from Kayce Walker and Holly Holl put runners at first and second. A Megan Turk fly out to left forced the second out and Canion went down looking to end the threat.
Alabama struck first in the bottom of the first, with back-to-back bunt singles to lead off the inning. A Clare Hosack pickoff at second got Kayla Braud, and advanced Jennifer Fenton to second. A wild pitch put Fenton on second, and following a walk to Whitney Larsen, Amanda Locke hit a sac fly to left to score Fenton for a 1-0 lead. Canion walked the bases loaded, but got Kaila Hunt swinging to end the inning.
Holl led off the fourth with a single down the right field line, and after pinch runner Makenzie Robertson came in, she was sacrificed to second on a bunt from Meagan Turk. Canion went down swinging and KJ Freeland grounded out to short, leaving their third runner stranded.
Alabama doubled its lead in the fourth off an RBI-single from Larsen with two outs in the inning that scored Ryan Iamurri for the 2-0 advantage.
The Crimson Tide added another in the fifth, again with two outs, as a single to center from Hunt was misplayed by Shelton, allowing Locke to score from second for the 3-0 lead.
A leadoff single to right from Shelton in the sixth went for not, as Walker rolled into a 4-3 double play to clear the base paths.
Jackie Traina came on for the seventh, and was greeted with a leadoff single from Megan Turk, the first hit she had given up in the postseason. Canion followed up with a strikeout before a pair of groundouts ended the game.
The Lady Bears will face the winner of Oklahoma or Missouri on Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. CDT on ESPN2.
