WACO, Texas - Baylor's Vic Hoffman scored the game's first goal just over four minutes into the game, and the Bears (1-0-0) never looked back, en route to a 3-0 win over Sam Houston State (0-1-0) before a crowd of 604 Friday night at Betty Lou Mays Field.
"I was pleased with our overall effort tonight," head coach Marci Jobson said. "We had some great finishes and our defense wasn't tested too much. It was a good first game and now we have a tough one on Sunday."
With the win, Baylor moves to 11-4-1 in season-opening games and 10-1 in home openers, including a 4-0 mark under Jobson.
Hoffman put Baylor on the board 4:13 into the game after a long ball was played over the top of the Bearkats' defense by Hanna Gilmore, allowing the sophomore to one-touch it by the goalkeeper and slide it into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
The Bears kept the pressure on until freshman Justine Hovden found the back of the net in the 44th minute. Alexa Wilde sent a pass out wide to the right wing where Hovden collected it and maneuvered past three defenders before blasting a left-footed shot from 20 yards out, beating the keeper to the far post for the 2-0 lead.
Baylor held a 2-0 lead at the half, as the Bears kept Sam Houston without a shot for the first 45 minutes.
Maintaining possession throughout most of the second half, Baylor added its third and final goal in the 81st minute on a left-footed cross from Christine Clark that found the head of Wilde, beating the goalie to the near post.
Baylor held Sam Houston without a shot in the game, recording a 20-0 advantage.
The Bears will hit the road for a Sunday match at Nebraska beginning at 1:00 p.m.
