LINCOLN, Neb. - Junior Dana Larsen notched Baylor's (1-0-1) lone goal in a 1-1 tie at Nebraska (0-1-1) on Sunday afternoon at the Nebraska Soccer Field in Lincoln. The result marks the third straight season the Bears have ended the opening weekend undefeated.
"This was a great first test for us," head coach Marci Jobson said. "To get a win on Friday and to tie a solid team on the road today, where we had chances to win, was a great way to start the season."
Baylor is now 3-0-2 against the Huskers over the last five years.
Natalie Huggins led the way with two shots and an assist on the day.
Larsen gave Baylor the 1-0 lead in the 16th minute after the BU defense cleared the ball out of the back to Huggins, who played a ball to Larsen, beating the NU back line and finishing from 15 yards out.
BU held the lead into halftime, but in the 59th minute, the Huskers struck with a goal from Stacy Bartels, who scored from 25 yards out to even the score.
Bethany Johnston nearly gave Baylor the lead back in the 76th minute when her shot struck the post and ricocheted away, keeping the game tied.
The Bears' defense, led by Courtney Seelhorst's nine saves, was stellar on the day, facing 22 shots from NU. Baylor kept enough offensive pressure, but were whistled for eight offsides calls.
"We have a lot to build from this weekend, but I am pleased with the way the team played," Jobson said.
The Bears will return home for a pair of games next weekend, beginning with Cal State Northridge on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
