WACO - Freshman Natalie Huggins' first career goal was all Baylor (2-0-1) would need en route to a 1-0 win over Cal State Northridge (0-2-0) Friday night at the Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field. The result keeps the Bears undefeated on the young season.

"This was such a hard fought victory for us," head coach Marci Jobson said. "We battled so hard in this heat and Northridge is a tough opponent. We have to get rested and recovered for Sunday."

Huggins, who tied Alex Klein with a game-high three shots, became the fifth different player to register a goal this season, as the Bears have totaled five on the year.

Huggins nearly struck in the third minute after just beating the Matadors' keeper to the ball, slipping it just wide of the goal.

She made her next shot count, however, receiving a ball from Hanna Gilmore in the ninth minute and beating her defender to the outside before a left-footed blast beat Cynthia Jacobo to the far post for a 1-0 lead.

BU goalkeeper Courtney Seelhorst recorded her second shutout of the season with four saves on the day, including a great diving catch on the near post in the 14th minute.

The Bears' defense kept the Matadors at bay for most of the game, and senior Hannah Dismuke showed a flash of individual brilliance by saving a potential game-tying goal in the 17th minute. A shot from Heidi Farran went towards the far post, but Dismuke came out of nowhere to clear it off the line and save the lead.

Baylor held a 1-0 advantage into the break and nearly added a second goal in the 55th minute off a half-volley from Vic Hoffman that missed wide by just inches.

BU held off one final attack from Northridge in the final 10 seconds, as the ball bounced around the six-yard box before the final whistle blew.

The Bears outshot the Matadors, 10-9 on the night and evened the series 1-1 all-time.

Baylor will remain home for a Sunday afternoon match against UTSA (0-3-0) at 1:00 p.m. It's Kids Free Sunday with children 12 and under receiving free admission.
