AUSTIN, Texas - Dana Larsen's goal in the 88th minute gave Baylor (8-2-1, 1-1) a 1-0 win at Texas (6-3, 0-1) before a crowd of 3,867, the fifth largest in Texas soccer history. The win over the Longhorns was the first since Sept. 26, 2005 and the first victory in Austin since Oct. 10, 1997.
"It's great to have a win on the road in the Big 12," Larsen said. "It's a great win for our program and shows the progress we are making."
The Bears have now scored 15 of their 22 goals in the second half.
"I am really happy for Dana," head coach Marci Jobson said. "We just had to finish our chances, so I am glad we put one away."
With just over two minutes to play, Hanna Gilmore spun by a UT defender and towards the end line for a cross that found Natalie Huggins, who dished the ball across the goal to Larsen for the finish. The scored was the fifth on the year for the junior, who leads the team.
I was just standing there and touched it in," Larsen said. "I didn't have to do much. As usual, it was a whole team effort."
Baylor's defense allowed just one shot on goal from UT, as Courtney Seelhorst recorded her Big 12 leading sixth shutout of the year. The Bears had six shots on goal and nine overall, matching Texas.
"It's not as much the win as them getting to have a result of all the hard work they have put into it," Jobson said. "We preach mentality and it finally paid off. This team getting a win like that is good for them."
Justine Hovden nearly put the Bears on the board in the 31st minute with a shot that sailed inches over the crossbar. Baylor held a 4-2 shot advantage in the first half but were tied at 0-0.
The 1-1 conference start is the best since 2005 when they also dropped a match to Texas before knocking off the Longhorns.
Baylor host Weber State on Sunday at noon where kids 12 and under receive free admission.
