Cross Country Competes at Notre Dame

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Baylor's cross country teams competed against an elite field of 14 ranked teams on Friday at the Notre Dame Cross Country Invitational on the campus of the University of Notre Dame.Baylor finished 19th on the women's side and 26th on the men's side against the competitive field. Florida State took the women's title and BYU was the champion on the men's side, each placing its top five runners in the top 20.
For the women, freshman Rachel Johnson was the top finisher, just ahead of senior teammate Cate Westenhover. In their first 5,000-meter race of the season, Johnson placed 75th with a time of 18 minutes, zero seconds and Westenhover crossed the line one place and one second behind.
Freshman Erin Hegarty and senior Kristen Hanselka each finished in the top 100 of the 25-team race, coming within seven seconds of both Johnson and Westenhover. Hegarty completed the course in 18:03 to place 79th, while Hanselka was 88th at 18:06.
On the men's side, senior Zac Flowers was the top Baylor runner for the second meet in a row, followed by sophomore Brad Miles, who was the top BU runner in each of the first two meets. Flowers finished the five-mile course in 25:53 to place 137th, while Miles crossed in 26:09 to place 154th.
Baylor's cross country teams will rest next weekend and then send squads to separate meets on Oct. 15-16. First, a Baylor group will travel to the Chile Pepper Festival on Friday, Oct. 15, in Fayetteville, Ark. The next day a separate group will take on the nation's best at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind.
