VERONA, N.Y. -Entering the final round with a three-stroke lead, the Baylor men's golf team battled rainy conditions for an 11-stroke victory Monday at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate. It is Baylor's first season-opening tournament win since claiming the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate in September 2008.
"It rained the last 12 holes, but we continued to play well all day long," head coach Greg Priest said. "With Mikkel's (Bjerch-Andresen) 2-under and two other even-par rounds, we couldn't have asked for better play in tough conditions."
Baylor posted the best team score of the final round (290) by two strokes, finishing at 11-under 853. TCU finished second overall at even-par 864; Purdue and Missouri tied for third at 2-over 866, while Bowling Green finished fifth. TCU's Julien Brun, who owned a share of the individual lead with Baylor's Kyle Jones through 36 holes, won the individual title, finishing at 8-under 208.
All five Baylor golfers finished the tournament in the top 15, including three top-10 performers. Baylor true freshmen Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen and Kyle Jones made their collegiate debuts in New York, each posting top-10 finishes.
"Both did what I expected them to do and more," Priest said. "Mikkel posted the low score of the final round and played really well. Kyle played great the first two rounds and, unfortunately, Monday wasn't his best day.
"Playing in the final group of his first college tournament, Kyle had never been in that type of situation," Priest said. "Next time, he'll be able to better handle it, but this tournament was a great way for both to start their college careers."
Bjerch-Andresen paved the way for Baylor, shooting a final-round 70, to finish tied for fifth at 3-under (72-71-70=213). Jones and senior Joakim Mikkelsen tied for 10th place at 1-under 215. It is Mikkelsen's 12th career top-10 finish, moving him into sixth place on the Baylor career list. Jones shot a final-round 78 to post a top-10 finish in his collegiate debut.
"It's great to open the season with a win, but now we must focus on next week's tournament in Michigan," Priest said. "Hopefully, this performance will give us confidence and momentum as we move forward."
Junior Ryan O'Rear recorded his fourth career top-15 showing, finishing 14th overall at 2-over (71-75-72=218). Senior Lorenzo Scotto tied for 15th at 3-over (74-69-76=219) - his seventh career top-15 finish.
"We can't look behind us; we have to focus on the next one," Priest said. "It's a totally different field on a different course. Like I said before, we start over with each tournament and take it one shot and one event at a time."
Baylor returns to the course Sept. 12-13 at the Wolverine Intercollegiate in Ann Arbor, Mich.
