CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- Baylor's fifth-ranked women's tennis team ran into one of the hottest teams in the nation in No. 17 Tennessee and fell 4-0 in the Round of 16 at the ITA Women's Team Indoor Championship in Charlottesville, Va.
The Lady Vols (5-2) entered on a four-match win streak with the last two over top-25 opponents and kept their streak alive in a shutout win over Baylor (9-2). The shutout was the first for BU since Feb. 16, 2007, and marked the second consecutive loss for the Lady Bears after a 9-0 start.
Baylor fell in a hole early in the match, as Tennessee opened with the doubles point and took the first set in four of six singles matches on the way to the victory. Baylor's No. 14 Diana Nakic and Megan Horter each won their first set, but each went unfinished when the Lady Vols clinched their fourth point.
"Tennessee has a great program, and it really showed today," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "They out-competed us at almost every position, and that's inexcusable for us. Right now, we need to drastically change our attitude and bounce back tomorrow."
The Lady Vols claimed wins on Courts 2-4, all in straight sets. Seniors Nina Secerbegovic and Sona Novakova each suffered their first dual-match losses of the seasons, snapping a 10-match win streak in each case. UT's No. 27 Brynn Boren took down Secerbegovic 6-0, 6-3, while No. 59 Kata Szekely beat Novakova 6-3, 6-3. Caitlyn Williams dropped only two games to BU's Jordaan Sanford in a 6-2, 6-0 win.
In doubles, the Vols controlled the action on Court 1 with an 8-1 victory, and broke a mid-match 5-5 tie to win 8-5 on Court 2 for the point.
Baylor will be back on the courts in consolation action at the ITA Women's Team Indoor Championship on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The Lady Bears' consolation opponent was not decided at press time due to remaining matches in action.
