WACO, Texas - As part of its ongoing effort to educate student-athletes and staff about athlete-agents, Baylor University's Athletics Compliance Office recently hosted Mike Powell, an attorney in the Business & Public Filings Division of the Texas Office of Secretary of State, on campus. Powell's duties include oversight of the athlete-agent registration process in the State of Texas and investigating alleged violations of Texas athlete-agent laws.

During a day-long seminar, Powell and Baylor Compliance staff educated student athletes, the Faculty Athletics Representative, and athletic staff on Texas state athlete-agent laws including those governing the athlete-agent registration process, the limited permissible means by and times in which athlete-agents may initiate contact with student-athletes, and the ramifications of violating these laws.

"We are proud that all of our athletics teams here at Baylor produce elite student-athletes on an annual basis," said Baylor Senior Associate AD for Compliance Chad Jackson. "We believe it is our role to undergird them with proper athlete-agent education. This enables them to make informed decisions when the appropriate time comes for them to consider representation for the professional level.

"Mike Powell and the Texas Secretary of State Office are a tremendous asset in this education effort and we look forward to continuing the partnership in the future," he added.
