LUBBOCK, Texas - Baylor's 12th-ranked women's tennis team was unable to come back from a slow start in a 4-3 loss to No. 20 Texas Tech on Thursday in Lubbock, Texas.
The Lady Bears (11-4) dropped the doubles point on a tiebreaker on Court 1 and then split the six singles matches for their first Big 12 loss since early last season.
"We've got to give a lot of credit to Texas Tech," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "They came out in the doubles matches and battled. We just weren't able to respond in singles. We have a lot of work to do on the practice courts, and need to work to get better every day."
In doubles, Baylor took the first win on Court 2, getting a victory from the senior duo of Diana Nakic and Sona Novakova with an 8-4 win over Nikki Sanders and Caroline Starck. The Lady Raiders quickly matched with an 8-5 win on Court 3, leaving the point up to the matchup of Baylor's No. 46 Nina Secerbegovic and Megan Horter against No. 47 Samantha Adams and Kenna Kilgo. The TTU duo came back from down a break to tie the match at 8-8, going on to win the tiebreak 13-11.
In singles, Texas Tech kept the momentum on their side, winning first sets in three of the six matches. Baylor countered with straight set wins by Nakic and Secerbegovic on the first two courts. No. 9 Nakic defeated No. 122 Elizabeth Ullathorne 6-1, 6-4, and No. 32 Secerbegovic took down Samantha Adams 6-0, 7-5 to even the score at 2-2.
From there, Texas Tech notched a pair of three-set victories to put the match out of reach. On Court 3, TTU's Rashmi Teltumbde won the third set 6-4 over 47 Sona Novakova, and Sanders defeated BU's Megan Horter 6-0 in the third for the clinching point.
With the match clinched at 4-2, Baylor's Ema Burgic added the final point with a comeback 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 win over Starck.
Baylor will be back in action at home against No. 8 Northwestern on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Hurd Tennis Center.
