CORAL GABLES, Fla.- Baylor's 11th-ranked women's tennis team will have its hands full, hitting the road to take on 12th-ranked Miami on Tuesday at 4 p.m. CT/5 p.m. ET in Coral Gables, Fla.
The Lady Bears enter the match off a nine-day break since beating then-No. 8 Northwestern, 4-2. The win also snapped a two-game skid with losses to No. 21 Texas Tech and No. 3 UCLA. In the Northwestern match, 47th-ranked Sona Novakova bounced back from a loss to defeat No. 118 Belinda Niu in straight sets, while 32nd-ranked Nina Secerbegovic moved her dual-match singles record to 14-1 with a win over No. 51 Brittany Wowchuk.
In doubles, Secerbegovic and freshman Ema Burgic proved to be a lethal combination, taking down the No. 4-ranked Northwestern pair of Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton. The win by Secerbegovic and Horter on Court 1 also spurred on their Court 2 teammates, Sona Novakova and Diana Nakic, to victory, giving Baylor its first doubles point in seven matches.
Baylor also features a top-10 player at the top of the singles lineup in No. 9 Diana Nakic. Despite a loss to 20th-ranked Kate Turvy of Northwestern her last time out, Nakic leads the Lady Bears in singles wins with 22 on the year, including a team-best nine over ranked opponents.
Burgic, meanwhile, has also been impressive in the clutch for Baylor, compiling a 6-1 mark in dual-match singles play. Of her six wins, three have been the clinching point in a match against a top-10 team.
On the other side, Miami enters on a six-match win streak to bring their record to 8-1 overall. The Hurricanes feature three ranked singles players, including No. 12 Anna Bartenstein, No. 25 Gabriela Mejia and No. 118 Lina Lileikite.
Baylor leads the all-time series against Miami 6-4, including five consecutive victories. Last year, the Lady Bears played host to the Hurricanes, winning 5-2.
