CORAL GABLES, Fla.- Facing its eighth consecutive top-25 opponent, Baylor's 10th-ranked women's tennis team was out-dueled by No. 12 Miami on the road on Tuesday in Coral Gables, Fla.
The Hurricanes came out firing in doubles and became the seventh team in the last eight matches to take the opening point from Baylor. The momentum kept going Miami's way in singles, as the UM took five of the six singles matches in straight sets to extinguish any Baylor comeback attempt.
"Miami absolutely outplayed us today, the scoreboard doesn't lie," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "We have a lot of work to do and some attitudes to adjust if we want to make something happen this season."
In doubles, seniors Diana Nakic and Sona Novakova opened their match with a 2-0 lead over Gabriela Mejia and Lina Leleikite, but the Miami pair rebounded to take eight of the next 10 games for the win. Coupled with their dominant 8-2 win on Court 3, the Hurricanes claimed the point. Meanwhile, Baylor's duo of Nina Secerbegovic and Ema Burgic was erasing their own 2-0 deficit to go on to win 9-7 over Anna Bartenstein and Brittany Dubins.
Miami then took two singles wins before Baylor could get on the board with Dubins defeating Nicole Kosakowski 6-3, 6-1 on Court 6 and Melissa Bolivar defeating Burgic 6-1, 6-2.
Even though Novakova was in the process of defeating No. 99 Lileikite in straight sets 6-4, 6-1, Miami still held leads in each of the final three matches. The Hurricanes closed out each of those with wins by No. 20 Bartenstein, No. 32 Mejia and Liat Zimmerman over No. 27 Secerbegovic, No. 13 Nakic and Megan Horter.
Baylor will be back in action next Tuesday, hosting 24th-ranked Clemson in a non-conference match at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas. The match is slated for a 5 p.m. start, and fans are encourage to wear pink to promote the Sic' Em For the Cure Breast Cancer Awareness program.
