IRVING, Texas - Baylor's Logan Vick has been honored as the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Baseball Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. It's the second time Vick has won the award in the last four weeks.
Vick was also honored as the league's Player of the Week on Feb. 27. A junior centerfielder from Kerrville, Texas, Vick becomes the fifth Baylor player to earn two Big 12 Player of the Week honors in the same season and the first since Josh Ford in 2004.
The Big 12 leader with 11 doubles on the season, Vick doubled in all four games during the week. He hit .636 (7-for-11) with four doubles, four RBI, four runs scored, two walks and a stolen base to lead Baylor to a three-game sweep of Texas Tech to open Big 12 Conference play. He also had a double in Tuesday's game at UT Arlington.
Vick slugged 1.000 and reached base at a .692 clip in the sweep of the Red Raiders. In the series opener, Vick had a two-out RBI single in the first inning, walked and scored a game-tying run in the fourth inning and doubled in the eighth inning.
Vick went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a stolen base, one RBI and one run scored in the second game of the series. His double in the sixth inning brought in the game-tying run and he came around to score the go-ahead run. His double in the eighth broke a 3-3 tie by scoring Cal Towey with the eventual game-winning run.
In the series finale, Vick broke a scoreless tie with a two-out, two-run double in the fourth inning. Those runs would prove to be enough, as the Bears went on to win 8-1, but he also walked, singled and scored another run.
In addition to collecting three more doubles than any other Big 12 Conference player, Vick also ranks 11th in the league with a .338 batting average, tied for 11th with 25 hits and 39 total bases and tied for sixth with 14 walks.
Vick joins Charley Carter (1998), Mike Huggins (2002), Chris Durbin (2003) and Josh Ford (2004) as the only Baylor players to earn two Big 12 Player of the Week awards in the same season.
Baylor's 3-0 start in conference play is its best since starting 3-0 in 2005. The Bears' best-ever start in Big 12 play came in 1999, when Baylor started 4-0 on its way to a 20-7 league record. Baylor hosts Kansas for a three-game series at Baylor Ballpark this weekend. Friday's game is the first of two Dogtopia Bark in the Park nights this season.
