April 6, 2012

WACO, Texas - The No. 22 Baylor softball team (26-12, 3-6) stretched its winning streak to four games with a doubleheader sweep of Kansas (23-12, 2-9) Friday at Getterman Stadium, winning game one, 3-0 and game two, 6-1.

The Lady Bears belted three home runs on the day, as Shelbi Redfearn, Megan Turk and Sarah Crockett all went deep for BU. Jordan Strickland led the way with three hits on the evening.

"We knew our hard work was going to pay off if we kept fighting," head coach Glenn Moore said. "This team is capable of hitting home runs and scoring runs, but with the wind blowing in so hard here early in the year, it made it tough. We have really responded well since we got back home, but we have to keep it going."

Baylor and Kansas will wrap up the series on Saturday with first pitch at 11:00 a.m. Following the game, there will be an Easter Egg Hunt in the outfield and fans are encouraged to bring their own baskets.

Game One
Baylor 3, Kansas 0

Redfearn broke a scoreless tie with a solo home run to lead off the sixth, as BU scored three run in the sixth for a 3-0 win in game one.

Courtney Repka (12-6) collected a season high eight strikeouts en route to her third complete game shutout of the season. The junior allowed six hits, while walking one in 7.0 innings.

Baylor had a great opportunity in the second inning, as Clare Hosack led off the inning with a single, and after being pinch run for by Kaitlyn Thumann, advanced to second on a sac bunt from Kelsi Kettler. A Jill Reid single to third put runners on the corners, and following a steal from Reid, Strickland struck out looking to end the threat.

Repka found herself in a jam in the top of the sixth, as three-straight singles from the Jayhawks loaded the bases with no outs. Repka got Liz Kocon to line out to short, and coaxed a fielder's choice on a grounder to first that was thrown in time for the force. With two outs, she struck out Rosie Hull to end the inning.

Redfearn led off the sixth with her third home run of the year and second in as many games to give BU a 1-0 lead. Hosack found her way on with a hit by pitch and advanced to third on a one-out single by Kayce Walker. With two outs, a wild pitch from Alicia Pille scored Hosack and Strickland delivered an RBI-single to make it 3-0.

Game Two
Baylor 6, Kansas 1

A pair of two-run home runs from Turk and Crockett led Baylor to a 6-1 win in game two.

Kansas took a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth on a solo home run from Maggie Hull over the right field wall.

But Baylor answered right back in the bottom half of the inning with a Turk two-run shot to left for the 2-1 advantage. Strickland drove a one-out single through the left side, and with two outs and a full count, Turk delivered her second homer of the year. Liz Paul singled to left center to set the stage for Crockett, who came on to pinch hit. The freshman drove her first career home run over left center for a three-run lead.

The Lady Bears added two more runs in the fifth when Kathy Shelton led off the inning with a double to left and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Strickland added her second RBI of the game when she reached for an outside pitch and drove it back up the middle to score Shelton. Walker added an RBI of her own with a single to left that scored Hosack for the 6-1 lead.

Paul (8-5) earned the win, throwing 7.0 innings, giving up just four hits, one run and striking out three. She retired nine of the final 10 batters, allowing just a bunt single in the last three innings.
