IRVING, Texas - Baylor junior Josh Turley was named Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Week, and freshman Adam Toth was selected as Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. This marks the fourth straight week a Baylor player has earned a Big 12 weekly award.
Toth became the first player in program history to win the league's Newcomer of the Week award, which was created prior to the 2011 season. Turley picked up his first Big 12 Pitcher of the Week award and the second by a Baylor pitcher this season. Trent Blank was previously honored as Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 27.
Toth, a freshman from Coppell, Texas, won the award just eight days after returning from a broken wrist that kept out of the starting lineup for 20 games. He hit .500 (6-for-12) with one double, two RBI, three runs, a walk and a stolen base to help Baylor to a three-game sweep at Missouri. The sweep was Baylor's fourth consecutive Big 12 sweep.
Toth went 4-for-4 with a walk, two runs and two RBI in the series finale. His RBI double in the sixth inning plated the first of four runs that would complete a comeback from a 6-2 deficit, and his RBI single in the seventh provided what would prove to be the winning run. Toth also singled, stole a base and scored a run in the second game of the series, and he recorded the Bears' first hit of the game in Thursday's series opener.
Turley, a junior from Texarkana, Texas, improved to 4-0 on the season by holding Missouri to one run in 8.1 innings in Baylor's 3-1 series-opening win. He faced just one batter of the minimum through the first eight innings with the help of three groundball double plays. Turley's outing was his longest of the season and helped the Bears improve to 8-0 in games he's started on the mound - all eight of which were the first games of a series or tournament.
Turley retired the first six batters of the game in order, and after two straight hits in the third inning, he held the next 15 batters hitless before a one-out infield single in the eighth. He erased that baserunner by inducing a double play grounder on the next pitch. Turley was efficient, throwing 63 of his 92 pitches for strikes. He lowered his season ERA to 2.20, which ranks fifth in the Big 12.
No. 8 Baylor returns to action with a pair of midweek games against Louisiana-Monroe at Baylor Ballpark. The Bears are on a 14-game winning streak, which is tied for the second-longest in program history. Tuesday's game against ULM is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., and all tickets are $3, including available reserved seats. Wednesday's game is $1 hot dog night and Dogtopia Bark in the Park.
