Oct. 13, 2014 DALLAS - Following Saturday's historic 61-58 comeback victory over No. 9 TCU, the Football Writers Association of America has named Baylor its Big Game National Team of the Week.
The Bears trailed by 21 points with 11:38 remaining in the fourth quarter, before scoring 24 straight points to down the Horned Frogs. BU tied its largest deficit overcome in a game (1980 vs. SMU, 2011 at Kansas) with the victory.
The victory kept Baylor undefeated on the season with a 6-0 overall record and a 3-0 mark in Big 12 play. Baylor has started 6-0 in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history. The win also gives BU a lead in the all-time series between the two schools, 52-51-7. Saturday's contest was the first time in the series that both teams had been ranked.
Baylor set schools records for first downs (39) and plays (109) in the win as well as tying the school-record for most points scored in a fourth quarter (24). The Bears' 782 yards of total offense were the second-most in school history.
The game was only the second-ever AP top-10 clash in Waco -- the first was in 1956. Baylor is now 7-0 in home games against AP Top 25 opponents since 2011.
Baylor won its school-record 13th consecutive home game -- its last loss in Waco was Oct. 13, 2012, vs. TCU. The win also made BU bowl eligible for the fifth straight year for the first time in school history.
Baylor and TCU's 119 combined points were the most between two top 10 teams since the AP started its poll in 1936 (previous record was 105 by Nebraska and Oklahoma State in 1988).
This is the fourth time Baylor has been recognized as the national team of the week. The Bears were honored after the 2012 K-State win, the 2011 TCU victory and in 2003 following a win over Colorado.
Fourth-ranked Baylor now plays another Big 12 road game at West Virginia on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT. The contest will be broadcast on FS1.
