Oct. 14, 2014 WACO, Texas - Baylor senior quarterback
Bryce Petty was named the Davey O'Brien Quarterback of the Week and The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week for his performance in Saturday's 61-58 come-from-behind win over No. 9 TCU.
Petty has now won five honors for his play in the victory. On Sunday, Petty was named the Athlon Sports National Player of the Week and the Walter Camp Offensive Player of the Week. Meanwhile at the conference level, Petty garnered Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors on Monday.
Overall, Petty has helped the Bears to a 6-0 start and a No. 4 AP ranking. On Saturday, the senior signal caller helped BU tie the largest deficit overcome in a game (1980 vs. SMU, 2011 at Kansas). BU trailed by 21 points with 11:38 remaining in the fourth quarter, before scoring 24 straight points.
In the contest, the Midlothian, Texas, native tossed a career-high six touchdown passes, equaling the school record. He also threw for a personal-best 510 yards, the second most in Baylor history, on 28-of-55 passing. All six of his touchdown passes went for at least 25 yards, including two of more than 60 yards.
In the final period, Petty had 123 passing yards and two passing scores to engineer scoring drives of 45, 92, 91 and 44 yards.
A semifinalist for the Davey O'Brien Award in 2013, the senior currently ranks 14th in total offense (328.6) and 17th in passing touchdowns (15). He also is listed among the top 15 in the NCAA in passing yards per completion (10th, 15.19) and passing yards per game (13th, 306.8).
All 128 FBS quarterbacks are eligible for the weekly honor, which is determined by a subset of the Davey O'Brien National Selection Committee. The final weekly award will be issued on Oct. 27 prior to the paring down to 16 semifinalists for the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award on Nov. 3.
The reigning Tyler Rose Award winner, Petty snagged the weekly accolade from the Tyler Chamber and SPORTyler. The accolade recognized the top offensive player, who was either born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four year D1 Texas college.
Petty's receivers, Corey Coleman and Antwan Goodley, were named to the Tyler Rose's Honorable Mention Player of the Week list.
Baylor plays another Big 12 road game at West Virginia on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT. The contest will be broadcast on FS1.
