Oct. 9, 2014 IRVING, Texas - Baylor's
Kyle Jones has been selected September's Big 12 Men's Golfer of the Month, as announced by the conference office Thursday. The award is the second for Jones, as he was honored in March last season.
Jones is one of four Baylor players to earn the Big 12's monthly honor, and with this month's award all four are two-time honorees. If Jones wins again during his senior campaign, he'll become Baylor's first three-time winner.
A Snowflake, Ariz., native, Jones led the Bears to a tournament championship at the season-opening Gopher Invitational and a third-place finish at the Fighting Illini Invitational, where BU finished ahead of the top three teams from last season's final national rankings.
Baylor made the nation's largest leap in the season's first GCAA coaches poll, going from unranked in the preseason to No. 8 nationally. BU is the highest-ranked Big 12 Conference team, eight spots ahead of the next closest, No. 16 Texas.
Jones finished tied for third place individually at the Gopher Invitational after shooting rounds of 71, 69 and 73 to finish at even-par 213. He tied for fourth at the Fighting Illini Invitational with rounds of 72, 70 and 73 to finish at 5-over 215 on the difficult par-70 course. He had the teams' best score in four of six rounds during the month, and his 71.33 stroke average is best on the squad.
Baylor returns to competition following a four-week with this weekend's Rod Myers Invitational at Duke University Golf Club. The two-day, 54-hole tournament begins with 36 holes on Saturday and concludes with a final round on Sunday.
