McLANE STADIUM ? WACO, TEXAS
NOV. 22, 2014 ? ATTENDANCE: 47,179 Baylor Head Coach Art Briles
Opening statement...
"I thought the crowd was outstanding, very vocal and energetic. Dressed in black is a great atmosphere for our guys and recruits and everyone watching the game. I thought Oklahoma State played really well on both sides of the ball. They were going to fight hard and we knew that coming in. I'm proud that our guys came in and finished the game against a good football team."
On the weather...
"When we got out there and it wasn't raining early in the game. We had to get it while we could. We had to get points on the board because we knew the rain was coming. But we ran the ball a lot more toinght than we would have normally."
On CB Tion Wright in his first start...
"Tion did a good job. I'm a Tion believer. He's got light feet and he's a great competitor and a great teammate. He's had to work hard to get where he's at. I thought he worked hard and did a good job."
On the running backs...
"You can't play with one running back, so having several guys you feel really comfortable with is big. We kind of backed off Bryce [Petty] tonight because of safety and weather but I was glad he got that last touchdown. I thought that was justification for what happened about 11 and a half months ago."
On scoreboard watching...
"It all matters, but we just have to play good football. In the last five weeks, we play basically two games so that's why I wanted to get this game in. It was critical that our guys got to get on the field and play. We fought through some tough things early this year with our schedule and now we're set to where we can finish strongly."
On the fourth quarter drive...
"We know firsthand how a game can flip just like that, so that was a huge interception [by Orion Stewart]. Momentum is always the best player and coach on the field. When you're down like that you can be a little more fearless."
Baylor QB Bryce Petty
On the weather...
"It all kind of stopped on us. We really didn't know what to expect. We wanted to come out and attack and start fast and we did. And then we kind of lulled out a little bit and it took us a while to get going. Any time you get out there you've got a chance to win or lose, and you want to come out the winner in that. It wasn't pretty. Weather is weather but both teams are dealing with it. You can't cry about it."
On getting the fourth quarter touchdown with his run...
"Redemption. Every one of those steps, I was thinking `don't trip, don't trip, don't trip.' It was that point of the game where you have to score. It makes my mind ease up a little bit."
Baylor WR Cory Coleman
On scoring quickly...
"It's really important because we have to start fast. They beat us last year because we got off to a slow start."
Baylor RB Shock Linwood
On the weather...
"Growing up as a kid playing video games I always played in the rain, so it felt good."
On several guys getting chances tonight...
"It keeps them going. Everybody has a different style of running, so when different guys get the ball it gives us a different look."
Baylor S Orion Stewart
On his interception...
"The receiver ran a crossing route and when I saw it, I?just jumped it and he threw it right to me."
On making big plays...
"I?think it's just a blessing from God. I feel like I'm a playmaker on the back end and that's what I'm trying to do for this team."
Baylor DL Javonte Magee
On how the defense has grown...
"I?feel like we're one of the best in the nation. I know we're not where we want to be but I feel like we could compete with anybody -- anybody in the nation."
Baylor NB Collin Brence
On finishing today's game...
"We would have really liked to have finished better. We like to start fast and finish strong so we don't really think we finished as strongly as we would have liked. We have a lot of areas to improve on, myself included. We would have liked to finish a lot better but we're looking forward to this week to regroup and the coaches are going to coach us extremely hard but we're ready for it. We're going to play extremely hard every single day. We're excited about the opportunity."
On his interception...
"It was my first college interception. We've run plays like that in practice all week so I've seen that. We're taught with the quarterback rolling out we get to the sideline and look for anything to help out underneath so that's what I did. I?was hoping he would throw it my way and he did."
Baylor RB Devin Chafin
On the game from his perspective...
"It was a fun game. I?had a lot of errors that probably everybody didn't see that I'm thinking about. So it wasn't perfect but it was fun for me to play and to do what I?do."
On how Bryce Petty is when he doesn't throw the ball as much...
"I?think he takes it pretty well. He seemed like he was good the whole time. He took a couple of hits. I?was kind of scared but he's pretty tough. He's fine."
Baylor DT Andrew Billings
On OSU's quarterback...
"I watched a lot of high school film on him to see how he was but it was challenging just trying to figure him out. He ended up being a hold it, hold it and throw it guy."
On pressuring the quarterback late...
"We were really trying to put some pressure on him late and get some looks on him to see what he would do with the pressure. We found out that worked out pretty well."
Baylor WR Jay Lee
On getting two touchdowns early...
"It was good to start fast because you never know what's going to happen on the back end. We just tried to go out there and jump on them because we could."
On the passing game...
"We've been working on that all week. We knew coming in what we were going to run and just had to grind it out."
Oklahoma State Head Coach Mike Gundy
Opening statement...
"I thought our guys at times played pretty well. There were times that we made too many mistakes. We've got to do a better job of correcting the short side of defense and allowing big runs. Offensively, we started to run the ball more aggressively in the middle of the third quarter and fourth quarter. We needed to start the game out that way. We had a couple other mistakes that we need to do a better job of coaching in the two-minute of getting out of bounds and saving some time. I thought that our guys competed. We lost to a better football team than we are right now. We have to keep moving forward in the week and get some guys rest."
On the loss...
"This could've very well been the best game we have played in a month. We still have a ways to go and things that bother me. I'm not taking away from [Baylor]. They are a really good football team. They're very explosive. We all know that, I don't need to sit here and talk about it. At times I don't think that we were in as good of position that we needed to be in on the defensive side of the ball. Offensively, we got really aggressive in the middle of the third quarter. It's almost like we figured out that `hey, it's going to be okay and go play.' Some of that can be from lack of confidence. When you don't win in a certain number of games, you're not going to play with confidence early in games."
Oklahoma State Defensive Coordinator Glenn Spencer
On going down 14-0 early...
"One of them was a double move that got us and the other one I think we misplayed the ball. The guy ran past and we recovered, but we misplayed the ball. [Bryce Petty] throws a great deep ball. Their receivers adjusted to it in the air. One of them was a little off but readjusted and put it in a great spot. Right after that I had to change things up dramatically. We couldn't afford for that to keep happening. We hung in there, but it's tough to stop the run doing that on both sides."
On changing the defense to stop Baylor's receivers...
"[When you try to stop the receiving game] it opens things up. But you've got to do it. You've got to find a way to stop the run when you're trying to help the guys on the outside. Some of those were more like pick your poison. They're experienced and very well-coached. Their quarterback is really good. If you show too early, he'll get them the exact play that he needs to, and they've got big-time players to execute."
Oklahoma State LB Seth Jacobs
On playing with more energy late in the game...
"We definitely played hard throughout the game. We didn't quit and gave great effort to the end. You have to give credit to Baylor. They played well and have a talented team. They showcased that tonight. We're not happy with the loss, but we just have to more forward and focus on winning our last game."
