Nov. 24, 2014 TYLER, Texas - Baylor offensive stars Corey Coleman, Shock Linwood and Bryce Petty are three of 16 semifinalists for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, the award's selection committee announced Monday.
Baylor is the only team in the country to have three players make the semifinalist list.
Since missing the first three games of the season with an injury, Coleman has returned to be BU's top receiver. He is averaging 124.4 receiving yards per contest, which is tops in the Big 12 and would be third nationally if he met the minimum games played requirement. Coleman's nine touchdown grabs lead the conference as well, while ranking 12th nationally. Coleman has the nation's longest action streak with at least one TD grab in seven straight games.
Linwood is on the cusp of becoming Baylor's fourth straight 1,000-yard rusher with 977 current yards on 198 rushes. He is picking up 4.9 yards per carry and has 13 touchdowns on the season. The Linden, Texas, product is second in the Big 12 in rushing yards per game (97.7) and his 13 rushing scores are 16th-best in the country.
This season, Petty has thrown for 2,683 yards and 23 touchdowns, while completing 58.3 percent of his passes. In his second year as a starter, the Midlothian, Texas, native is 10th in the FBS with 14.74 passing yards per completion and 18.0 points responsible for per game. He ranks 11th in the NCAA with 398.1 yards passing per game. Petty has thrown a TD in 22 straight games in which he has played and leads the Big 12 in passing efficiency 151.7, the country's 16th-best mark.
The senior signal caller has previously been named a semifinalist for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award, the Maxwell Award and the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award as well as a finalist for the Unitas Golden Arm Award.
All three players are part of the nation's top offense as the Bears are averaging an FBS-best 584.5 yards per game and scoring 50.0 points per contest.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the top offensive player in Division 1 football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community, and tenacity; specifically tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.
In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four year D1 Texas college.
The three Bears are part of five players from the Big 12 on the list including Trevone Boykin (TCU) and Josh Doctson (TCU).
A year ago, BU had four players on the semifinalist list, including Antwan Goodley, Petty, Tevin Reese and Lache Seastrunk.
Finalists will be selected from this group and announced on Dec. 10. The winner will be announced at the award banquet in Tyler, Texas on Jan. 14, 2015.
BU is off to a 9-1 record and a 6-1 league start for the first time since 1980. The Bears are ranked No. 5 in the AP Top 25 and No. 6 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
The Bears will now face Texas Tech on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in Arlington, Texas, at AT&T Stadium. That game is will be broadcast to a national audience on ABC.
