Nov. 3, 2014 Opening Statement:
"I don't know if we could have ordered up a better atmosphere from a weather standpoint to a crowd standpoint the other day for our game. That was a really good deal for Baylor--not just for our football team, but for Baylor University because a lot of people view Homecoming as a special day and a special time, which it is, and it's nice to have the fulfillment of winning a football game to go along with everything else that's positive on that day."
On getting a win in Norman:
"It would be as big as beating Iowa State in 2008, winning a Big 12 game and doing something that hasn't been done in awhile. It would be big from the standpoint that we're trying to establish ourselves just like everybody else in this league as a team that can sustain and it's been hard to do because there have been five champions over the last five years. That tells you something right there about the parity in the league. That hasn't even been mentioned, and won't be because it's our job to win whether we're playing in McLane Stadium or we're playing in Norman, Oklahoma."
On Chris Callahan's improvement:
"It's gratifying from the standpoint that he is 10 out of 10. That's very impressive on any level in any space or time. We certainly would have liked to not put him on the field that much the past few weeks, but that's kind of been the way the scenarios have played out. He's a real technical guy. He knows when he doesn't do right--like the other day on the extra point. He knows precisely what went wrong and the remedy to that is to fix it before you kick it, not after. I do think confidence plays a factor into success or failure as a kicker, and right now he's a confident kicker."
On how last year's OSU game applies to the upcoming OU game:
"We're not going to talk about that, because that was last year and this is this year. We understand the task at hand. We understand how they've protected their house over the last decade-and-a-half. When the ball's kicked off, it really comes down to playing football, and they've just had a lot of really good football teams over the past 15 years since Coach Stoops has been there. It's a situation of where we're both fighting for the same thing--Big 12 credibility and a Big 12 win. Whether we could take something out of that game a year ago--I don't see anything because we have more recent history to pull from than that."
On Bryce's "ready for OU" comments:
"I didn't hear about that until I got in there. I don't take anything from it. I take he's focused and ready and he's in a no-nonsense attitude, which I appreciate whole-heartedly, and that's the way our whole football team needs to be. We'll play around in January. Right now it's business."
On the challenge of Trevor Knight:
"He's tremendously athletic, and they're doing a great job of utilizing his skills right now. Coach Heupel and some of those guys that coach on the offensive side of the ball are utilizing his skill level set and it adds a different dimension any time you play around a running quarterback. You've got to account for him in the run game now. It's something he really excels at plus he can also throw the football."
On if Bryce (Petty) is frustrated:
"He'll be up here in a minute, and you can ask him. I don't get it. I don't see it. Check the percentages of winning quarterbacks in Baylor history and I would guess he's number one. I think his record is 17-3, it'd be 18-3 if he'd started against Northwestern (State)."
On defensive readiness:
"I want to be as comfortable as you'd like to be. They're extremely good on the offensive side of the ball, as you know. They've got good personnel and they've got good schemes. They run a variation of tempo and slow down, and Trevor is a key to it. It has the settings to be a really great football game, and we've got to uphold our end of the deal on both sides of the ball and special teams. I feel good about the attitude and personality of our players going into the game without question."
On Shock Linwood:
"He has been good and he has been durable and he has at times been dynamic. I think without question the thing that impresses me about him, and I told him this in front of our players, is he brings an attitude of toughness and inspiration that we would all like to possess. He's never going to slow down or stop and he's always going to be the aggressor, and that's why he is as good as he is when he's good. He utilizes his skill level about as good as anybody I've ever seen, which to me is the greatest compliment anybody could pay you--everybody's got different skill levels. If you reach that skill level, you've accomplished something. If you never get there, then you're wasting your skill level set. I think he utilizes his skill level about as well as anyone we've got, and then you add all the intangibles and you have a complete player."
On defense getting pressure on an offensive line that doesn't give up many sacks:
"That's critical, but it's a good matchup for us. We certainly feel good about our defensive line--those guys have been really good all year. We're going up against a really good offensive line. Those guys are good and they do a good job. They scheme it up well and they run plays a little bit to keep you off balance. But, like I said, I like the personality of our guys and I like the skill level of our guys going into the game."
On why Norman is such a difficult place to play:
"I can answer for those two times we were up there. It's a tough place to play. I glanced at a resume last night, but I think in Stoops' era they've only lost 5 times there in 16 years. I'm not sure if that's correct--I just kind of glanced at it and it seemed to jump out a little bit. But we've been pretty good at home the last couple years ourselves. That's part of the deal. You go play and fight your butt off to win."
On reducing penalties:
"It's critical. Penalties are drive killers or drive sustainers depending on what side of the ball you are on. They're also a part of the game. You've got to live with it whether it's against you or for you. If it is for you, you've got to take advantage of it. Our third down efficiency was better, because we were able to run the football better. We had more manageable third downs. There wasn't anything magical that we did offensively or what we did in practice. It was down and distance."
On the importance of this Saturday's game:
"We put a lot of stock into it, because they are a storied program without a question. If you're a casual football fan that keeps up with college football, the name Bud Wilkinson may mean something to you. Barry Switzer, Bob Stoops may mean something to you. They've done a tremendous job for decades as a program up there. So for us to be able to come out on the top side a couple of times here lately is a boost for our program from a recruiting standpoint."
On defensive end K.J. Smith:
"If people expect you to perform, you better perform or they're going to find someone else that will. I think he stepped his game up, because he's got game. He's a talented guy and I think that he got out of his comfort zone a bit, which is what we asked him to do. I think that he proved to himself that he is a worthy member of our defensive line like he was in the spring. He is one of the best defensive linemen in America. He established himself, which was a good thing."
On how far he'd let Callahan try a field goal:
"I think on a calm day I'd say about 45 yards. If the wind is not a factor, 45 to 47 yards. You're looking at a 70 percent shot there which is a pretty good percentage from there. If it is over that, we have a guy that is our long field goal guy. Inside 45 yards, Chris should be in the 90 percentile."
On having Corey Coleman and Devin Chafin back healthy:
"You have two very dynamic players, without question. We've always known about Corey since he stepped on campus. We felt like he could do a lot for us offensively and inspirationally. He is passionate and tough. I'm glad that he is healthy, because he gives us an added dimension from an offensive standpoint with his speed and toughness. Devin is the exact same thing. He hasn't been healthy the whole year, but is healthy now for game nine. It'll be better for him, because he only has over 40 carries versus 110, so he is fresh and ready. He adds another dimension of toughness and speed to us. That's a good combination to have on your side."
On Saturday's postgame:
"I'm just really excited about this week. I never wanted to come off like Kansas wasn't important. They're a really good team, so anytime you get a big win like that, it's huge for us, but I'm really excited about this week. It's a big opportunity for us and a big opportunity for them, so there's a lot of hype around it. So I didn't mean anything by it. I didn't mean to come off as rude or obnoxious or mocking you guys' profession at all. Like I said, I'm excited."
On Tony Romo:
"I mean, he can call me if he wants. Everybody deals with it differently. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, so he'll be fine, just like I am. As far as a back injury to have, this is the one to have. It kind of heals itself and he's got all the good people up there to help him out just like I had all the good people down here to help me out. So he'll be alright."
On having Corey Coleman and Devin Chafin back:
"Corey (Coleman) is one of the most explosive guys I've ever been around. He's very dynamic and can do a lot of things for us. You guys have seen him carry the ball too, so he's great. He's a game changer every time he touches the ball. And the same with Devin (Chafin). Devin is 227-225, around there, and can run and return kickoffs for us. So he's just explosive and anytime you get dynamic guys back, that's what you want--guys that can take it to the house every time they touch it. So I'm really excited about having those guys back and production wise, that's confidence for me."
On getting destiny back in Baylor's hands:
"It's important for us. Not to be cliché, but it really is about us. It's all about Baylor. We can't get in that spot unless we take care of what we do. It doesn't really matter who helps us out or who doesn't help us out. We've got to take care of what we can take care of, and the rest will take care of itself. So it was good that it ended up like that, but we're looking at Oklahoma right now, nothing past that. We have to make sure we execute well because it's going to be a hostile environment, one that you're excited about as a competitor. But at the end of the day, it's about us."
On what makes this game so exciting (running game, Oklahoma, atmosphere, etc.):
"All of the above, I guess. Everything is great. This is why you play football, to go into a hostile environment like what they have up there in Norman and play the game we love. I hope you can tell the excitement about it from me and especially from all these guys. Every game is a statement game. Every time you get out there, all you have is an opportunity, so that's all we want--an opportunity to show who we are as players, as individuals, as a team, and as coaches as well. So it's just another shot, another opportunity, and we're excited to have it."
On Oklahoma's defense:
"They're extremely talented, especially up front. They've got a lot of big guys that can move, that can run. Their front seven is really well coached, and back end wise, they fly around. So it's going to be a great challenge for us. They've played teams really well, so I don't know what we're going to see. I'm kind of expecting and preparing for anything and everything. So like I said, as far as offensive wise, they're really good and they play really well at home."
On Shock Linwood:
"He brings the spark, the load, the energy... everything that you can possibly ask for in one person, he brings it. He might be short, he might be small, but he doesn't play like it. He plays like he's 6'8" 300 lbs. So I love him to death. He's one of my favorite guys to watch. I've got a couple on the team that I love to watch, but he's definitely one of them. He kind of gets us going, especially any time we're struggling offensively. He somehow brings a run in there and just kind of sparks everything and we get rolling off of him."
On the opportunity to win for the first time in Norman:
"It's exactly what you said. It's an opportunity to get a Big 12 win here, there, neutral site, wherever. It just happens to be in Norman. So we have to take care of business. We'll talk about that after the game, but for us, it's preparing and executing. It doesn't really matter where we play."
On learning from OSU last year:
"We did learn a lot that game. We were kind of riding high and got humbled a little bit. That's what this game does to you. So you have to prepare each week like it's your Super Bowl. Not to say that we didn't last year, but we're not going to let that happen this year as far as any lack of preparation on anybody's part, myself included. It'll be a great challenge on everybody's part, one that we look forward to. We're not going to run away from it. We'll see how it all goes down on Saturday."
On funding research for Cerebral Palsy:
"That's knocking out two birds with one stone where I'm from. That's a great cause. My hat's off to Levi (Norwood) and (Spencer) Drango and those guys that had a lot to do with that. Any time you can add motive to what you're doing that's bigger than you, it adds a lot more emphasis to what you're doing and how you're doing it. So it's great that we can be a part of that and raise awareness and score touchdowns too."
On not connecting with Antwan (Goodley) lately:
"Me and Antwan (Goodley) had a lot going last year and teams noticed that, so I think they're playing him a lot different this year. And then you throw in the injury bug and really for both of us, it kind of throws us off. So I don't have any doubt as to the player Antwan is or our connection. We're going to link back up; it's just a matter of time. It's just about going out there and taking each play one play at a time. What we can't do is get frustrated. We kind of both are in that sense because we want it to happen so bad, but he's a great player on and off the field, so he's got my back and I've got his. It's going to happen sooner rather than later."
On Pat (Colbert) and Jarell (Broxton) and the offense:
"I was very pleased and very happy with how they performed. They definitely stepped up to the plate. It's easy to do that at home, so we're looking forward to watching those guys on the road in a big environment. But those guys did a great job."
On how long it took him to fully recover from his injury:
I would like to think it came back to me right away, but it definitely didn't. I am not sure when everything finally felt good, but now I feel fine and I feel finally back to normal."
On if it might be better to be under the radar right now as a team:
"We would like to be undefeated, but we are not. We are not the team that everyone is talking about, but that is fine with us. We still have our job to do and that is to win, and that is what we are focused on doing."
On learning from the game against OSU last year and applying it to this week against OU:
"I think any loss is a learning experience. Really any game, even if it is a win, is a learning experience. There are things from the other day that we have to take and learn from. There is stuff from last year at OSU, and stuff from this year at West Virginia. All things that we will learn from, and they will be things that help us beat OU."
On how the running game has gotten better over the course of the season:
"We are getting better each week with us being consistent. Our guys are ready to play and to go out and get our team a win."
On how the lost against West Virginia fuels them:
"It kind of put us on the back burner. It showed us that we didn't like the feeling of losing. We are going to use that as a weapon for us to go out and play better each week."
On the performance of the guys filling in on the Offensive Line:
"Jarell (Broxton) and Pat (Colbert) and the guys on the right side of offensive line, I think those guys did pretty good. It was their first time to play a full game like they did without any subs, so I think those guys played tremendous."
On getting back on the right track coming off the loss to West Virginia:
"It was huge for us. Definitely with the loss at West Virginia it felt good to go out and have a good game both offensively and defensively. It was a good boost for the team."
On him having fresh legs due to an early season injury:
"It feels really weird but I am happy that I was able to come back and bounce back from that injury. It wasn't fun sitting and watching the first six games. It is great and it feels good."
On giving the team another option to make them even more dynamic:
"It feels great because I feel like I had a pretty good fall and spring so I came into this year with big expectations. For me to finally get those reps and to get a feel and to finally get going with the team and to help contribute feels great."
On the win against Kansas:
"It was definitely fun and exciting to get out there after the bye week and get a win, so it was fun."
On his 72-yard play early in the game:
"It was exciting just getting the ball in my hands to start off the game. I had to get that feel and touch for the ball, and then I was ready to go."
On playing in Norman this week:
"We know it is going to be a tough place to play. There are going to be a lot of people there, and we are just going to have to keep on rolling with the punches and stay focused. We are ready to go to Norman."
On winning two of the last three years against OU:
"This is a new year, so we have to focus on making sure the details are right at practice."
On the importance of the running game against Oklahoma:
"Up front we just have to be fearless and relentless. We can't give them anything. We have to come off and hit them in the mouth every time. None of that soft stuff, we have to go at them."
On the chemistry on the right side of the offensive line:
"Jarell (Broxton) and I have been working together since the spring, so we haven't had too many chemistry problems. It is a big thing that we have already been working together."
On coming in like they did:
"It was a bad way that we came in, but we just have to step in and play a big part just like they are on the other side."
On stopping OU early:
"This is (a big game for us). They are an outstanding team. We have to keep them at a level where they get down on themselves. Once they get going, they are a very good team."
On the defense playing at its best:
"Coach (Phil) Bennett is getting us to our highest peak, and all we have to do is believe in all his methods and we will continue to be good. The season is coming down to its final stretch, and this is where teams begin to fall off while some come up."
On blocking for Shock Linwood and the running backs:
"It's always fun blocking for him because he plays hard and passionate. We feel that if he gets hit once that he will keep going and keep gaining yards for us. As an offensive line, it is awesome to have those guys back there, because you are up there taking hits for them and they take hits for you to get the extra yard."
On looking to win for the first time in Norman:
"Any time that you can go up to a place that you haven't won at and come back with a victory it is good. It would be a great thing for us. Oklahoma is a great team and Norman provides a great environment to play in. It will be a good challenge for us."
On Oklahoma's offense:
"Trevor Knight has improved from last year. He looks a lot better. He has great receivers and running backs. The offense as a whole looks really good. We just have to be ready to contain them."
On getting back on track as a defense:
"Coming off the loss to West Virginia was huge because we knew that we needed to change something. With this past week being Homecoming, we knew that we needed to put on a good show for the fans. That is what we did and were happy about it."
On each opponent giving it their best against Baylor:
"We just have to do our job and get it done at this point. It doesn't matter who we are playing. We expect everybody's best whenever we play any team. It's not just Oklahoma that is going to give us their best."
On the decision to come to Baylor:
"Places like UTEP and Ole Miss would've been difficult for my family to get to. Even though all of my family had gone to Texas, the education and the Christian atmosphere (got me here). At the time, the program was on the rise coming off of Robert Griffin III and Nick Florence. Everything just fell into place, and this was where I needed to be."
On overcoming struggles early on this season:
"It was tough, but you are always going to have those hard times. How you make it through those times is what makes you a better person. Through everything I became stronger as a person and more confident as a kicker. I've been 10 for 10 through three games now, so I'm going into OU feeling great."
