Nov. 3, 2014 PHILADELPHIA - Baylor senior quarterback Bryce Petty (Maxwell Award) and junior defensive end Shawn Oakman (Chuck Bednarik Award) were both named one of 20 semifinalists for their respective awards by the Maxwell Football Club Monday.
The 78th Maxwell Award will be given to the Collegiate Player of the Year and the 20th Chuck Bednarik Award will go to the Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year.
Petty is a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award for a second straight season. He joins Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon, Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota and Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston as repeat semifinalists.
The Bears have now had five semifinalists for the award in the last five years as quarterback Robert Griffin III was a semifinalist in both 2010 and 2011 and Petty was joined by running back Lache Seastrunk in last season.
In 2014, Petty has led Baylor to a 6-1 record and No. 10 ranking in both AP Top 25 and Amway Coaches Poll. With Petty at the helm, BU's offense is No. 1 nationally in total offense (590.3) and scoring offense (50.3). He has amassed 1,757 yards through the air by completing 117 of 214 passes with 17 touchdowns and only 3 interceptions. He ranks seventh nationally in passing yards per completion (15.41) and points responsible for per game (19.7). Petty has been responsible for 2 or more TDs in an FBS-best 20 straight games. The Midlothian, Texas, native also has 45 carries for 100 yards and three touchdowns.
Petty is one of three Big 12 QBs on the list, including TCU's Trevone Boykin and Kansas State's Jake Waters. West Virginia wide receiver Kevin White is also a semifinalist.
On the defensive side, Oakman has racked up 31 tackles, 12.5 TFLs and 6.0 sacks through eight games. He leads the Big 12 and ranks third nationally in fumble recoveries (3), as well as leading the Big 12 and sitting at ninth nationally in TFLs per game (1.6). Oakman also ranks 22nd in the NCAA and third in the Big 12 in sacks per game (0.75). He has helped BU lead the Big 12 in run defense (99.9 ypg), while ranking eighth nationally.
He is Baylor's first Bednarik Award semifinalist. Oakman and Texas linebacker Jordan Hicks are the only Big 12 members on the semifinalist list.
The winners of the 78th Maxwell Award and the 20th Chuck Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show which will be broadcast on ESPN on Dec. 11. Three finalists for each award will be announced on Nov. 24 and a second round of voting will take place at that time. The formal presentation of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club's 78th Awards Gala on Friday, March 13, 2015, at the Tropicana Resort & Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
