FORT WORTH, Texas - For a second straight year, Baylor senior quarterback Bryce Petty was named one of 16 semifinalists for the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award Tuesday.

After tabulating the ballots of more than 75 Davey O'Brien National Selection Committee members as well as over 57,000 votes courtesy of the fan vote, Petty joined Brett Hundley (UCLA), Marcus Mariota (Oregon) and Jameis Winston (Florida State) as repeat semifinalists.

This marks the fifth consecutive season that Baylor's starting quarterback has been selected as a semifinalist for the award, and Baylor joins Oregon as the nation's only teams to make that claim. Robert Griffin III (2010 & 2011), Nick Florence (2012) and Petty (2013) previously made the cut to 16 quarterbacks. RG3 became Baylor's first QB to win the Davey O'Brien Award when he was honored in 2011. Petty is one of four Big 12 players among the semifinalists for the award that is presented annually to the nation's best college quarterback and is the oldest national quarterback award. He is honored alongside Trevone Boykin (TCU), Clint Trickett (West Virginia) and Jake Waters (Kansas State).

This season, Petty has led Baylor to a 6-1 record and No. 10 ranking in both AP Top 25 and Amway Coaches Poll. With Petty at the helm, BU's offense is No. 1 nationally in total offense (590.3) and scoring offense (50.4). He has amassed 1,757 yards through the air by completing 117-of-214 passes with 17 touchdowns and only 3 interceptions. He ranks seventh nationally in passing yards per completion (15.41) and points responsible for per game (19.7). Petty has been responsible for 2 or more TDs in an FBS-best 20 straight games. The Midlothian, Texas, native also has 45 carries for 100 yards and three touchdowns.

He was named Davey O'Brien Quarterback of the Week on Oct. 14, following his performance in a win over No. 9 TCU.

Semifinalists were chosen by the O'Brien National Selection Committee, with a fan vote accounting for 5 percent of the total vote. The committee was asked to consider quarterback skills, academics, character, leadership and sportsmanship.

The vote counts have been reset with the field narrowed to 16 semifinalists. Fans can now vote in the second round by visiting www.voteobrien.org. Three finalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 24, and the winner will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards airing Dec. 11, on ESPN. The 38th Annual Davey O'Brien Awards Dinner will be held Feb. 16, 2015, in Fort Worth, Texas.

Petty won the first round of fan voting, garnering 21 percent of all votes with 12,294. It's the fourth straight season that Baylor's QB has finished in the top three in the first round of the fan vote, with RG3 finishing third in 2011, Florence second a season ago and Petty being third a season ago.

Petty was already named a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award for a second straight season Monday. Baylor plays at 16th-ranked Oklahoma at 11 a.m. on FS1 Saturday.
