Nov. 6, 2014 WACO, Texas - Baylor seniors Troy Baker and Collin Brence were named to the Capital One Academic All-District VII football team, as announced by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Thursday.
Baylor has had at least one academic all-district honoree in every season since 2004, with 11 different players earning 16 total honors. The Bears had two members honored for the first time since 2010.
Both Baker and Brence have been starters for the 7-1 (4-1 Big 12) Bears, who are ranked No. 10 in both the AP Top 25 and the Amway Coaches Poll.
Baker owns a 3.72 GPA, while working towards his Masters of Business Administration. He graduated in December 2012 with a degree in finance and a 3.40 GPA. The local Waco product was a key member of BU's offensive line that blocks for the nation's No. 1 offense and the Big 12's best rushing attack. He sustained an injury in the West Virginia game and has been sidelined ever since. He is a nine-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll and a two-time Academic All-Big 12 first-team honoree. The fifth-year senior started the first seven games of the season.
Brence keeps a 3.73 GPA, while majoring in professional sales. He has started in all eight games for Baylor this year at the "Bear" position (hybrid linebacker/safety). As a former walk-on that was given a scholarship in fall camp, Brence has racked up 28 tackles, sixth-most on the team, and seven QB hurries, the team's second-best mark. He is a four-time Baylor Dean's List member and a six-time Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll selection. Brence earned 2013 Academic All-Big 12 first-team honors.
