Dec. 16, 2014 WACO, Texas - Baylor head football coach Art Briles was named one of 12 finalists for the Dodd Trophy Tuesday. The award, issued by the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, will be announced in Atlanta during Peach Bowl week.
Briles, in his seventh season at the helm of the Baylor football program, helped Baylor earn back-to-back Big 12 championships in 2013 and 2014. Briles and the Bears finished No. 5 in the College Football Rankings and will take on No. 8 Michigan State in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic in Arlington, Texas, Jan. 1.
The Dodd Trophy, established in 1976, seeks to recognize the head coach of a team that emphasizes the highest ideals of scholarship, leadership and integrity on and off the field. Dodd was the head coach of Georgia Tech for 22 seasons from 1945-1966.
Jimbo Fisher (Florida State), Hugh Freeze (Ole Miss), Bryan Harsin (Boise State), Urban Meyer (Ohio State), Jim Mora (UCLA), Dan Mullen (Mississippi State), Gary Patterson (TCU), Gary Pinkel (Missouri), Mark Richt (Georgia), Nick Saban (Alabama) and Dabo Swinney (Clemson) join Briles as finalists.
Briles, has compiled an 89-61 record in 11-plus seasons with a 57-43 mark in six-plus seasons as Baylor's head coach. The Cotton Bowl will mark Briles' ninth bowl appearance in 12 seasons as head coach. The Bears have posted back-to-back 11 win seasons in 2013 and 2014 under his direction.
In addition to the Dodd Trophy, Briles is a 2014 Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year finalist, and was named the Waco Tribune's Big 12 Coach of the Year.
The 2014 Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl will feature No. 9 Ole Miss and No. 6 TCU at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Dec. 31 at 12:30 p.m.
