UB STADIUM • BUFFALO, N.Y.
SEPT. 12, 2014 • ATTENDANCE: 24,714 Baylor Head Coach Art Briles
Opening statement:
I thought our guys showed a lot of maturity. We have a team that has won on the road some and I think it showed up tonight. I thought Buffalo did a great job of building a game up with their fans being here in black and their team was excited. We hit a couple of big plays early and they had a missed opportunity to tie the game up 7-7 and then it kind of snowballed from there. Coach Quinn has done a great job up here. It's a tough road trip for us, I feel like we played an international game. We could throw a ball and be in Canada. It's a completely different deal for us and I was proud of our guys for holding it together and getting a big win.
Talk about converting a couple third downs on the first drive and coming out with a TD:
I thought we did a pretty good job on third downs tonight. I thought Bryce Petty was exceptional tonight to be honest with you and that's the Bryce that we are used to knowing. He hasn't played much this year, he played in one series against SMU. This was kind of his coming out party and I thought he was exceptional. He got us to the line of scrimmage, threw the ball around and protected himself. When you have an experienced quarterback like that you ought to convert third downs and that's how we look at it.
How curious were you to see what Bryce Petty would do tonight:
I wasn't really curious, I just wanted him to get comfortable. We know what he can do, I think he is the best quarterback in the country in college football. The fact of him getting out there with different personnel was a big deal. We have young receivers and running backs. For him to come into a situation like that in his first road game of the year against a team that was hungry to beat us, I think he did exceptionally well.
On scoring on your first four possessions:
That's something that we always try to do. That's one of our goals is to score our first four times we have the ball, all touchdowns. That kind of allows you to get into the game and then you go from there. If we can do that then we will have a chance to win a lot of football games, but that is one of our goals.
Buffalo Head Coach Jeff Quinn
"Disappointing loss against a very good football team, quality opponent. I give a lot of credit to Baylor. They certainly came in with a good, solid plan and they executed it extremely well."
"On our side of the ball, defensively, we did not perform on the back end the way that we needed to and that really cost us. I thought our run defense stepped up tonight. That was something we emphasized this past week - we always emphasize our run defense - but I thought our kids played with really good effort when it came to stopping their run game."
"Offensively - obviously at half time we didn't have any points on the board. We needed to establish an opportunity to do that. Early in the game we had a big, explosive play that we didn't connect on. It could have given us a lift early. We're always thinking about how to be explosive early in the game and we just couldn't connect with Marcus McGill. He was wide open down the stretch there - that could have given us a little lift."
"I thought in the second half, being able to put 21 points on the board - the way we ran - Anthony Taylor had a really strong run. There's no quit in this football team and I can see that in their eyes and the way they played. Being able to put 21 points on this defense that hadn't given up a touchdown all year shows that our kids understand what we need to do."
"It just wasn't a complete game for us. We knew that there were some miscues at times. We need to clean that up, have to go back and watch film and try to get better. I know we will. I know there are kids in there demonstrating a mature, responsible response to our coaching and our coaches have to continue to work hard to get those kids in the right position to understand what they need to do to execute their technique and fundamentals. We have to get back on the winning track. I'm excited about being back here next week."
