Sept. 18, 2014 WACO, Texas - Fall action for the Baylor women's tennis team continues this weekend as two players travel to opposite ends of the country.
Freshman Eliza Long heads east to Coral Gables, Fla. to compete in the Miami Invite, while senior Ema Burgic will compete in the Red Rock Open, an ITF $50,000 Pro Circuit event in Las Vegas, N.V.
Long is slated to compete in the first round of action in Florida starting on Friday. She is coming off two losses at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational last weekend. Players from South Florida, Pittsburg, Auburn, North Florida and Miami are scheduled to be at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center for the event.
"Eliza like many young players needs more match play," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "This tournament in Miami is going to provide that for her. She is working through the process of jumping from junior to college tennis."
In her second event of the year, Burgic will play in the 32-person qualifying draw, starting on Sunday at the Red Rock Country Club.
"Ema is a player, who has an ambition to play professionally after college," Scrivano said. "This will be great experience for her as she continues to get into the professional tennis environment."
Burgic faces a talented field, including No. 89 Tereza Smitkova of the Czech Republic and No. 99 Paula Ormaechea of Argentina. Last year's champion, No. 134 Melanie Oudin of the United States will return to defend her title.
The 55th-ranked Burgic heads to Las Vegas with a 2-1 record in singles play, after last weekend's Under Armour Kick-Off event. She has wins over USC's Madison Westby and Alabama's Emily Zabor.
