Sept. 24, 2014 THE RUNDOWN
LAS VEGAS, N.V. -
Baylor women's tennis senior Ema Burgic knocked off her highest ranked foe of the week and won her opening main draw match at the Red Rock Open by dispatching of world No. 181 Gioia Barbieri (Italy), 6-4, 6-0, on Wednesday.

With the event being an ITF $50,000 Pro Circuit event, the victory does not count towards collegiate stats, but Burgic now advances to the round of 16 on Thursday where she will face Portugal's Michelle Larcher De Brito.

HIGHLIGHTS
• Burgic has beaten Jacqueline Cako (No. 514 in WTA), Hayley Carter, who is No. 3 in the ITA, Maria (No. 298 in WTA) and Gioia Barbieri (No. 181 in WTA) over the past four days.
• Three of Burgic's four wins at the event have been in straight sets.

TOP QUOTE #1
"I'm trying to do my best out here and that's it. My focus is on me and not who is across the net. I'm just playing what we do in practice every day. I don't have time to enjoy a victory. Tonight, I'm going to pull my energy into studying for the classes I've missed. Tomorrow, I'll focus on my next match." - Ema Burgic on the win

TOP QUOTE #2
"I'm enjoying Ema's maturation process. It's a beautiful thing when a player gets it." - head coach Joey Scrivano

WHAT'S NEXT
Burgic will now play in the round of 16 on Thursday where she will face Portugal's Michelle Larcher De Brito. De Brito is currently ranked No. 138 in the world and is the eighth-seeded player at the event.
