SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Competing with all of its weapons for the first time in 2014, the Baylor women's cross country team placed fifth at the Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday.
The Lady Bears were led by senior Rachel Johnson, who was making her season debut. The Plano, Texas, native finished second overall in 20:41 over the 6,000-meter course at Les Bolstad Golf Course.
Sophomore Maggie Montoya, running with only one shoe for the final 5,000-meters, turned in a time of 21:50 to place 20th overall.
Behind those top two runners for BU was Alex Davis, who was 44th in 22:21, Mariah Kelly, who was 65th in 22:37 and freshman Ann-Marie Dunlap, who was 73rd in 22:47.
Those five runners tallied a total team score of 204 points, which was 18 points ahead of sixth-place Arizona State (222) and only 19 points behind fourth-place Boise State (185).
HIGHLIGHTS
• Baylor finished ahead of three ranked teams in the field: No. 11 Butler, 22nd-ranked Vanderbilt and No. 28 Minnesota.
• Baylor had a total of 11 girls competing in the event.
• There were 36 women's teams in the race.
